Re: solar charger, best recommendations?

Thankfully not the u.k but starting at Bilbao on a long hiking holiday otherwise dynamo would be the first choice. The zero looks more the direction I need to go but the powermonkey looks too small to kick out decent power?

solar charger, best recommendations?

I'm after one that will power an itouch for my daily music, on occasion power an older non smartphone and I'm not sure if the same type would power a small notebook? It needs to be reasonably hardy and ideally one of those wrap type that unfolds so you can lay it on various surfaces and of course reasonably light

Any ideas?

Re: New bike restriction on Eurostar

I suspect this is nothing more than their earning potential having plateau'd and they have seen just how much money the airlines are making from luggage charges

Re: Roberts v Thorn v Dawes v Surly

Based on new bikes, I've had both the Surly long haul trucker and Thorn Sherpa. Both were excellent for my needs and I would have either again without any concern.

A Roberts handbuilt is like a titanium, the extra cost does not give that much of a better bike but if I could trust myself to buy such exotica and keep it then as a long term bike I could just about convince myself it makes sense :D

If your looking for a particular make then there is always forums on that bike and they often have second hand well looked after ones for sale

Re: Touring Bike self build frame advice...

Top end of your budget if you are after new but sjs are doing sherpa frames and forks at 499 or go onto the thorn forums and see if anyone is selling a used frame/fork..they have obviously front and back provisions for mudguards and racks

then the obvious thing second hand is the usual forums and ebay

Given your size i would upgrade from cantis to a good quality set of v brakes

Re: Couriering a Bike - STILL NEED HELP!!!

I've used senditnow.com which amazingly is the cheap arm of parcelforce with them not asking size just weight and next day delivery for around £15-16

I have also sent a bike with just the pedals taken off and the handlebars turned sideways and then the bike box placed slid down but still able to wheel it to the van .. They still took it.

Re: Round the world without a penny to start with...

I have done this but on a much smaller scale but never with just a penny...As pointed out being on an island you first need money to get off

However this site might offer you free food and lodging in return for work http://www.workaway.info/

it doesn't give you free travel but when money is tight and you need somewhere to stop for a few days, clean up get a recharge then food and lodgings in exchange for a bit of work got me through quite a few situations

plan your trip and work locations wisely and you'll be suprised how far you can eek out your very small budget

Re: Touring on an older bike - advice sought.

For me the even distribution has worked best

I use thorn rear expedition rack being steel and thorn low ridders with a bar bag too

Heavy stuff goes on the back, lightweight bulky stuff like jumpers clothes etc in the low riders and quick need stuff like phones, maps, papers , chargers etc in the bar bag

I few tours makes you realise many things taken aren't needed but we all find this out over time

Servicing is more best insurance and peace of mind beyond that op then the most important part is the having fun bit
