Hi, please Don't use that route around Leyland and through Preston. I'm not sure how the rider picked it out, just doesn't make sense to swing about like that.
You're better off getting on the A49 south of Leyland, say Charnock Richard, ride through Euxton and arrive at Bamber Bridge. Pickup Route 55, taking a Left at The Hob Inn, into Preston. Follow Route 6 through town to the Crown Courts A6. Follow the A6 to the M6 / M55 Junction. Continue North on the Old A6, second exit off the major roundabout.

RickH wrote:Can you/does anyone put double couplers in so the top tub & down tube can be removed completely (& yes I realise it will be even more expensive)? The reason I ask is the separable version of the Circe Helios (although it doesn't use S&S couplings) comes apart by removing the whole of the rear top tube & bottom tube. I did meet an American couple visiting Yorkshire when the Tour de France started there & they had an S&S coupled (carbon fibre) tandem but I can't remember how many parts/joints it had.

Yes. Orbit are making an Open Framed design, made in Leeds by Bob Jackson. We've ridden with a couple who bought the second one to be made, although they weren't on it that day. They bought it to take overseas easily.

Re: 7th and Final LEJOG
How many feet per mile?
3,600ft of ascent in 61 miles.
That is flat at 59ft per mile.
Try riding round here.
100ft per mile is normal.
OK Cornwall has Hills. Lancashire has Hills. For me, doing LeJog was trying to ride a scenic route but iron out the Lumps where possible. As RickH said, keeping further West than this path through Lancashire is just as pleasing a ride without breaking the 50 ft per mile climbing.
Whilst your on with stats, what's the ft / mile from leaving the canal at Top Lock to Slaidburn.
A Pet Hate of mine; people spelling Samlesbury incorrectly. SAM les Bury. Not SALM es bury

Re: Tyre Direction
We've just come home after an Atlantic to Med trip, two couples on two Tandems fully loaded and towing trailers. All sorts of tyre problems from first day of riding, resulting in me fitting a Marathon Plus to the rear wheel, donated from front of companion bike. In error I fitted it the wrong way round and did not bother to reverse it. When 'grinding' our way up the Cols, we could hear the tyre biting in on each power stroke; we're not sure if this was worse due to wrong direction. Eventually the tyre delaminated and got a bulgeon on the circumference. It is possible that it was run under pressure as we did not take a pressure gauge; school boy error?
Not sure if the direction has anything to contribute but I will always fit in accordance with the arrows in future.

Re: Anyone use a trailer ?
We have a problem. I own a Thorn Discovery Tandem with a 160mm rear drop out. Due to a friend having his Cannondale Tandem stolen last week we now have to use both of my Tandems for our Atlantic to Med tour in August. Both bikes were going to tow Adventure C1 Trailers but the standard 'long' quick release is not long enough for the Thorn 160mm OLN.
Does anyone know if this item could be stripped down to provide a donor Skewer to fit the Adventure 'Cam End'?

Re: Tandem replacement brakes
We have a Mercian with Shimano RX100 DP's on, they have always stopped us very well. On steep hills I keep the speed down and 'pump' the brakes to avoid overcooking. On long shallow hills where I can let the bike have it's head I do, when needing to slow I again use the 'pumping' technique.
The bike has just the two rim brakes.

Re: New stem, what about spacers?
Do you mean 'Higher than the Steerer Tube?' The Stack should be just higher than the Steerer Tube so that when you clamp the centre bolt down it puts a load on the Stem not the Tube. Say 0.5mm to 2mm and have a greater than 50% contact Tube to top spacer

Re: Sora STI'S and Sora triple front changer on SJSCycles Ta
I've got at Thorn Tandem with a Straight Through Drive. That means I have Four chainrings on the right hand drive side crank so the Triple has to be further outboard than normal. The bike came fitted with the Excentric bush or shim which places the Mech further outboard aswell. When I got the bike it would not change onto the big ring but a replacement Mech cured that. I'm not using indexed on the Left / Front though.
If you get the Mech far enough outboard it will work. Whether front indexing will work having mixed systems is another matter?

If you're taking four panniers you need to lighten the load
I find that I just end up wearing my favourite shorts, shirt etc and carry somethings not to use them Washing things through, if you get the weather for drying is OK.

Re: JOGLE unsupported and camping
Have a look at the Camping and Caravan Club web site and find the small privately owned Certified Sites with only 5 pitches some of these have showers nowadays, in the past they were more for caravans with own facilities. If you mark these on your route you can keep a look out when you're ready to stop for the day.

Re: Shimano Cone Conundrum
Further to my Original question; it turned out that my Deore Disc Hub is a HB-M525 (without the A) To get the cone at a reasonable price and to be sure it was going to be the correct one, I bought a complete hub for £10. Last night I transferred the complete axle assembly and the bearings to my wheel, so much smoother now.
Along the way I also bought a HB-M530 non-disc hub because the rubber seals are common I thought the cone may also have been common, it wasn't due to the thread diameter. HB-M525 use a 10mm thread the HB-M530 is a 9mm thread; other than that the Cones are identical,
What I did notice on both the new Hubs, how tight they were straight out of the box May be the Factory settings are not correct. I set them as advised higher up the thread and bingo spinning freely.

Re: Shimano Cone Conundrum
Just taking the Plot a little further;
I've also bought a HB-M530, NOS £6.49, as the seals looked very similar to my Disc Hub, I can now confirm that the HB-M530 has the same Rubber Seal as the HB-M525 which is a Y-21H 04200. Can't confirm the Cone yet but it looks like it will be the same from the Tech Doc and it is symmetrical ie no Left and Right needed. Both Hubs take 10 x 3/16" Balls.
Just posting this in case anyone else needs to do the same searching.
