Re: Fed-up with slow fix of potholes?
Our parish councillor joined the monster raving loony party recently to get more publicity to fix 3 very bad potholes routes out of the village, it got him on radio Shropshire but we dont seem to be able to get anybody to fix these potholes despite YEARS of campaigning , the next village managed to get on Midlands Today a couple of years ago and they came along and sprayed tar and chippings over the potholes of the said road. Democratic system locally seems to of broken down , nobody standing for some seats , Tory leader of Shropshire Council lost his seat but there are so many Tory councillors it will not make any difference , all 5 mps for the county are Tory and they have just cut road repair budget by 25 percent. Why do people keep voting them in

Re: Fed-up with slow fix of potholes?
At least they seem to fix yours , here in my part of Shropshire they often do not fix them at all , there are 4 ways out of my village and 3 are unridable on a road bike. I have done everything including writing to my MP yet they still do nothing. They have been like that for at least 3 years. The tories cut the road mending budget by 25 percent a few days before the new financial year but for some reason people keep voting them back into power. They were in a terrible state before these cuts , many Third world countries have better roads https://www.shropshirestar.com/news/pol ... a-quarter/

Re: Council road repairs cash down £400m next year
|To not repair them is folly , they will have to be repaired at some point and you will end up replacing them not repairing them its like not repairing your house at the point its needed , you end up with a hole in the roof and destroyed house. I do not understand why fuel duty does not at least match inflation. If we are to reduce carbon , surely more tax on it will discourage miles. Also vehicle excise and fuel duty is not hypothecated , if it was there would easily be enough money to repair the roads. In reality a lot of the money comes from your rates , which have risen faster than inflation for many years

Re: Council road repairs cash down £400m next year
It also amazes me how crap our political system has become when you announce a significant change in budget 3 weeks before the budget year starts. Surely this stuff needs long term planning EG what you do this year , what you do next year, what quality of repair and maintenance you do . How do they get the labour , materials and capital expenditure on repair equipment when they have no forward visibility of budget . So what happens from what I see is they end up with a couple of blokes manually filling pot holes using a wheelbarrow and spade which they probably transfer between other jobs, the result of this around me is they do not tackle the lanes where there are 100 m sections that have degraded beyond what a man with a wheelbarrow full of tarmac and a shovel , can tackle

Re: Council road repairs cash down £400m next year
Did you read the article , it is an industry website and does go into the funding and its breakdown in some depth. I take your point that it like most government funding can be very smoke and mirrors , but this does attempt to get beyond the figures. Its also been reported in the Shropshire Star as a 25 percent reduction and those responsible who budget for these things and know the detail say they have got a lot less than expected.

Council road repairs cash down £400m next year
The roads around me in East shropshire are so bad I cannot use 3 out of 4 routes out of my village on my road bike I need full suss MTB for them . Its so depressing to hear this which has had little publicity . Consider the country roads are worse than ever and we have had 2 back to back quite hard winters http://www.transport-network.co.uk/Coun ... year/17135

Re: "Pothole" Bike
I can guarantee the roads in my part of Shropshire are far worse, my lane is flooded all the time with a sand bank and many big pot holes and grass down the middle. 3 of 4 ways out the village are barely passable. I at this time of the year generally use an old tourer , but sometimes an mtb with front suspension The mtb gives by far the better ride but is slower (2 inch tyres) and no mudguards as i keep it for proper off road. Sometimes i do detours to avoid the worst roads as i m only going around in circle anyway.

Slightly off subject , but every builders van and tractor now seems to have a large trailer attached permanently and do they go any slower ?

Re: Cyclist collides with cactus.... he is spiked not spoked
I did it once in Gran Canarie , it just stopped me going down a ravine, think it was a prickly pair , not bad at all as fewer spikes, just had to remove myself carefully

I live by the Severn in Shropshire and would estimate around half maybe more of the bridges are private with no public access

Not good, also the fact it has got so little coverage tends to reflect on attitudes to vulnerable road users
