Re: Vitus 979 frame, 51cm.
I have one of these and the ride quality is wonderful. The white tube version is quite rare I'd say and rather nice. Great price for a collectible, rideable classic that will match modern ali, even carbon bikes on weight.

Re: Battery pack obsolescence.
Yes, I agree with rareposter above. To own an e-bike you have to adopt a different mindset. One that's more inclined towards owning a car. Ah well, it was fun while it lasted, our Raleigh Kaputness, I mean Captus...

Re: Battery pack obsolescence.
This is a good question. The battery on our Bosch driven Raleigh Captus recently died. We have had the bike 7-8 years and it has had nowhere near the number of recharge cycles these packs are capable of. Rather, it has died of old age. Researching a replacement for the 300k pack I find they are quite hard to come by but are available with right connector in 400k.
I can't actually afford the £530 a new pack costs and am left feeling a bit miffed that I now have a hard to pedal (due to the hub motor) monster that has practically zero value blocking up the garage. Good job my trusty 30 year old Orange mtb still works...

Best torque wrench
Can people suggest a good torque wrench that will work on the various bits of a bike that need it.

Re: Rear carrier looks nice but...
To be honest I'm not actually looking for a rack. I was looking at a Bergamont bike for sale that has a rear rack on it of the type we were discussing ie fixed at the dropouts down below and on the steel/tin mudguard up top.
But, for what it's worth, on my customised touring bike (an old Orange C16 mtb from the 80s) I use a Topeak Tetrarack on the eyeless front fork. It has 4 rubber grips tightened in place by velcro straps. I hang two Vaude 10kg panniers on it no problemo. The Orange has eyes on the seat stays for a standard rack.

Re: Mudguard design
I think all of the alternative designs assume that you are a lone ranger. I often ride with my missus or friends and so have longs and an extended flap on the rear to protect people clinging onto my wheel

As I thought. In fact I wasn't thinking of getting one. I was just curious as they look too good to be true!

Yes I was thinking of the type shown on the Raleigh above. Seems to defy elements of mechanical engineering unless you are in the cotton wool delivery business

Re: Rear mudguard only
Thanks all. I noticed it is possible to buy a secondhand SKS race blade rear - though I do prefer the full size option - so maybe I'll try one.

Rear carrier looks nice but...
I've seen bikes advertised that have a rear carrier with no visible fixing points on the seat stays, for example. They seem to sit on the rear guard and fix on eyes at the rear drop-out. Are they stable and what sort of load rating do they have, compared with the conventional touring set-up (25kg)?

Rear mudguard only
Is it possible to buy a decent road rear guard (full length and running 25mm/700 tyres/wheel) on its own? I don't want a front one just now. G
