How long is the connection time at Inverness? It would be most unreasonable to prevent a passenger from getting a meal etc during a wait.
It was great in the 1980s watching all the wretched barriers being taken out. When I commuted it was rather stressful on a tight connection having to queue to get off one platform and queue to get on the departing platform at Waverley.

Re: Why have I never thought of this route before???
What a rude place name route that misses Worcestershire! That's where the action is with Lickey End, Bell End, the Piddles and some saucy street names.

Imagine the round trip possibilities. Coastal walkers would love it too. A bridge would be a destination in itself.

Re: Cycling, is there a factor for how liberating ?
Various bits are failing and walking has become painful - still do it but it hurts. The bikes free me from pain and allow me to visit the same sort of places that I would walk to by reducing the number of steps required. Fortunately I live in Scotland so shouty people and magic paths are not usually a factor.
Very liberating!

Been hit twice with this "excuse" - once on the bike and once in a car. The season is coming around again

£4.85 would be a difficult quantity of change to manage - we coped by giving the human driving the bus a fiver and accepting the loss of 15p.

I have recently travelled from Newton Stewart to Castle Douglas with the bike on the Stranraer - Dumfries bus.

Re: Cyclist stopped 3 times by police
This is very worrying - the Isle of Man is not the only place with a 450m road descent. Thanks to the TT if appears to have road surfaces beyond our dreams on this island. Effectively this is saying don't ride hills.Cowsham wrote: ↑23 Mar 2023, 11:06pm
If the cyclist was cycling to Ramsey via the A18 he could encounter other dangers. A tractor on a bend or leave the road altogether on that drop down to Ramsey, partly because of his speed or water on the rims from the thick fog, so there's more than just dangers from vehicles, the road itself is a challenge.
One thing to come out of this story for me is that I have finally noticed that hilly island you sometimes see from Galloway, and will be visiting ASAP. If the tar looks as good as it does on Streetview!

The Talla Reservoir railway trackbed may be part of the plan in the upper dale.

Re: Isle of Mull - Loch Buie
It’s an on and off path. Rocky in places, one bit has a fixed rope. Would not fancy it with a bike, definitely not with a loaded bike

Re: Velo South closed roads sportive - good idea?!?
Worth remembering that there are hotspots for commercial road closing. I live in one which has been plagued by runners. 5 days last year trapped against the sea. We also have a sportive but it does not close the road - yet!
Consistent pressure led to a reduction in number of roads closed (they don’t just close the route, so getting out was more complicated than simply crossing a road) and a reduction in hours of closure. We have even got public transport back, that was always taken down in the past. As a result the events are continuing and residents can actually travel.
It appears that the proverbial will be taken unless a firm but reasonable response is made. These closures are for commercial profit and other businesses can suffer horribly.

Re: Snow
Much happier in this stuff on the fatty than in a car. Even the black bits of today's ride were best avoided with a ton of metal if possible. Passed someone in a car (you know the brand, mutant Olympic symbol) in a full scale row with other cyclists - objecting to them being on the road (read his road).
Getting past 2km of completely filled in, dyke to dyke, road was interesting - made like Parker and took to the fields.

Re: Snow
Good to see the fatties out there having fun. Some great surfaces revealed this week but a hidden event was the high tides and east wind which has caused a change round on East Lothian’s beaches.
Funny to see comments about a cyclist being stupid because he was wading through nearly a metre of snow in order to get around a stuck car.

When the Airdrie Bathgate railway, a rails to trails Sustrans route was reopened, the path was retained beside the railway.

Had a near miss once in Herefordshire. Squirrel just missed me, dropped by a hastily departing buzzard. I did not have a magic hat.
