Re: Cycle storage at work
I have emailed the others and we are now a group. Someone with more clout than me has managed to get reasons for the hold up and the commitment to buy a decent shed, so it is all looking good.

Cycle storage at work
The company where I work has made the cycle sheds out of bounds for 9 months as they are unsafe to use. We are currently allowed to park in the office building but I am getting fed up as they are accessible by all and sundry and there is nothing to lock to.
A replacement has not been bought as they are 'very expensive'. I've had a quick Google and there seems to be a vast variety of designs. Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced cycle shed that will take around 10 bikes? Ideally weatherproof, secure with something to lock to. Maybe if I can give them some ideas, something will actually happen.
Thanks

Dawes Galaxy - What year?
Hi all,
My father has given me his Dawes Galaxy to sell on. To do this I would like to know its year of manufacture and if it has 531 tubing - there are no Reynolds stickers on the frame. The bike is blue with a opalescent finish that goes green in the right light. It has a Deore group set and quill stem, photo attached. He estimates it will be about 15 to 20 years old.
Many thanks

Re: How to get up a 20% slope ?
Got a bit further up the slope today - made sure I was in the lowest gear before it gets really steep. I had a nice gear and cadence but still stopped. I think I have identified the problem - low mental determination. Just looking at hills makes me back off on the tandem, so I'm told by my co-pilot. So its just down to me to get my head better prepared as my legs seem OK with it.
My co-pilot/technical advisor was unable to tell me what my lowest gear is without finding the paperwork (I have a 14 speed Rohloff). But as above I do not think the bike is the issue. I will get up there eventually but I am not sure it will ever be easy.
Thanks

How to get up a 20% slope ?
I am reluctantly changing my commuting route thanks to being nudged by a car and ending up with a brake lever around 4cm into my thigh. The new route is a fairly quiet, narrow road that climbs pleasantly before reaching 20% uphill for a bit. After only a week of trying this I can get past the 20% sign, up and around a tight bend then I bail out, stop and get my breath back, walk for 50m or so and remount.
I can do 20% on the tandem as I can just ignore the incline, look down and pedal hard. On a solo at slow speeds I wobble all over the place which is not great on a narrow road and not looking at the looming slope is not an option either. What I unrealistically would like is some top tips on how to make it easier, rather than being told to grit my teeth and over time I will get better

Shimano sandals - anyone doctored them ?
I have worn the old SD60 Shimano sandal until they have fallen apart. I have just bought some SD66s and they are excessively clumpy (this from a not particularly fashion conscious lady but even I have some standards). Has anyone tried to cut down the fabric and make them more 'sandal like' ?
I have looked at other models but I like the open toe design and Shimano regularly come out tops in reviews. The sizing is OK as if I had a smaller size my foot would not fit the sole.
Thanks

Best camping mattress that converts to a chair ?
We have toured with a Thermarest and a Downmat and chair adaptors for a while now. Sadly last tour they both developed faults and need replacing. Back support while sitting and the depth of a Downmat as I sleep on my side are vital to keep me happy while cycle touring.
As we tour with a tandem, size and weight is also extra important. Are Downmats still the best for sleeping and sitting ?
Apologies if this is covered elsewhere. I did search but did not find anything.

How to stop my bell tinkling on the move
I recently bought a smart new bell - the traditional style. It looks great but every time I go over a sharp lump/hole it gives a half hearted ring. Around town its kind of annoying but more than 10 miles will drive me mad. Any ideas how to stop it apart from getting a different one ?

Re: Tyre removing tool
Thanks folks....
I did just try my rather useless LBS which told me a tool for refitting tyres did not exist so I will try the Cranks Brothers speed lever and see how I get on.

Tyre removing tool
I had a telescopic 'magic stick' that helped me remove and re-fit tyres which sadly now has a vital part missing. The only thing similar I have found online is the Crank Brothers Speed Tyre Lever (see link) but it is made of plastic, not metal, so seems rather flimsey. Anyone know where I can get a similar thingummy in metal ?

Please don't bother telling me I should just use normal tyre levers etc. as although I can use them for the removal I have never yet managed to re-fit a tyre without the aid of the metal tool. I have had numerous demonstrations of this 'easy' technique from my partner and got nowhere but sore thumbs.

Re: Peak district - hills OK ?
Thanks - we can do 1 in 5 for a short while on the tandem but 1 in 4 is a definite no-no. We will see how it goes...........

Peak district - hills OK ?
We are kind of planning an Easter weekend break based at Bakewell or Matlock to cycle (on road) around the Peak District. I'm starting to think this is slightly mad as we will be camping (v. cold nights still) and the hills could be nasty. So as we have never been there before are the hills short and sharp or long drags ?
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Bike to work scheme limit excess
My partner bought a £2000 electric bike from 50Cycles to aid a long commute. I believe it was a £1000 bike with £1000 of accessories which was acceptable

Re: Speed in Royal Parks
My partner commutes a 40 mile round trip a couple of times a week through Windsor Great Park on an electric pedal assist bike. Added to the speed issue, apparently the park is not open to non resident pedestrians/cyclists after darkness falls.
As its a bit slopey I expect he exceeds 20mph now and again and now its dark by 5pm. I'll keep you informed if he gets stopped
