Charging devices in barbag

I do this too, but you must take care not to stress the connectors. Some batteries lack robustness around the cable ports and are easily damaged, breaking the internal connection.

Re: Sizing for specialized awol

I think the OP may find the geometry of the Salsa Fargo more appropriate.

Top tube length of the large Fargo is 580mm vs 600mm on the large AWOL.

Chain Length Conundrum

If you use the Campagnolo (small-small) method of chain measurement, the longest possible chain length is assured.

I've read mixed reviews and from what I infer the most derogatory ones are from people who don't appear to know the ins and out of how to use it.

Most people who advise it takes a while to get to grips with are very happy with it.

Navigation is exactly why I intend to buy it, care to advise what is bad about it?

Can you recommend an alternative?

Don't pay too much attention to the reviews - most don't test them for long enough for a real world experience. Read the forums.

Just Google 'Garmin Touring poor routing'. You can read the comments for yourself and decide if they matter to you.

An alternative - Mio (Magellan) Cyclo 500 - 505. The computer Garmin rushed out the Edge Touring in response to. Make sure you get the version with EU mapping.

Google 'garmin edge touring vs mio cyclo' to continue your research.

It's worth point out that both Garmin and Mio devices have their share of bugs and idiosyncrasies, so be prepared for a certain amount of frustration whichever you choose.

New Drop STI Levers That Work With MTB Gears

Nice build - but if you had chosen Sram, then Apex shifters are compatible with both front and rear Sram MTB derailleurs and also BB7 road brakes, so the Kellys would be redundant.
Worth considering for anyone contemplating a new build, and certain to be the choice for the new bike I'm planning, using a 2x10sp drivetrain.

Re: Pumping up 29er 2.4inch tyres

You need a Lezyne Micro Floor Drive HVG Mini Pump. Easily mounted on the frame and much better quality than the Topeak product.

Re: Tiagra STIs and a bar bag

I have an Ortlieb bag and use a Rixen Kaul Klickfix mount with distance set (upside down) and multiclip. I made the cables longer and fed them down through the mount. Works very nicely.

I did try V-noodles but thought they were ugly and don't work smoothly.

Maybe, maybe not...but you can get detachable drops for flat bars.

Look for Origin8 drop ends.

Circular routes & a suitable satnav.

Get s Mio Cyclo. They have s Surprise Me function that will propose three loop route alternatives based on either desired distance or time, rate each loop for difficulty.

Re: Bike satnav with a "quiet route" option

One of the Mio (Magellan) Cyclo family of bike computers might work for you.

You can create multiple bike profiles (6) for the desired routing type: City bike, Race bike, Mountain bike, Car, or Running.

For each routing type you can set the routing preference by selecting Prefer, Allow, or Try to avoid in each route option.

The route options are:
Major roads
Cycle routes
Unpaved roads
Cobblestone*
Highway
Ferries
Walking routes

(* For OSM only)

There is also a Surprise Me function which will offer 3 alternative routes.

Drop bars on an mtb?

Perhaps you should be looking at bikes like the Salsa Fargo or Specialized Awol, or if you have deep pockets, the CoMotion Divide.

Look on the Tubus website - you'll find several mounting options for fitting racks to bikes with no fixing points.

Raced 14 years with those.
Never had any problem, nor heard any problem with them, it's completely natural when riding in the drops reaching down to change gear.
Half the bandwidth of the internet is occupied by forums with indexgear releted problem.
Internet would be 50% faster without STI's.
Someone who cannot ride with downtube shifters shouldn't ride a bike at all.

Pass the popcorn.
