Re: Stuttgart railway station

I don't know the reason for our cancelled train direct from Nurnburg to Köln but I don't think it is strikes. We are now booked on our original train as far as Frankfurt and then an hour to kill before a connection through to Kòln. Sheduled arrival in Köln just after midnight. It's still a couple of weeks off so things may well change again! Meanwhile our Bavarian Tour with BikeExplore is proving very enjoyable.

Re: Stuttgart railway station

Thanks for all the helpful info. posted. It's great to know there is such good support available. Here is an update on how our journey went. The first train of our journey was cancelled 5 minutes before its arrival time in Köln and so we never got to Stuttgart. We finally arrived in Nurnburg after using 5 regional trains. The trains were not too busy and there was space available for our bikes. Although there were several carriages which took bikes we had to just pick on one and hope for the best. There is no way we were getting off to try another carriage if spaces had been full.
Unfortunately we have now had an email to say our booked, direct train for the return journey in a couple of weeks has been cancelled! We're off to the station soon to hopefully sort that.

Re: Stuttgart railway station

Thanks to all for the helpful replies and links. We booked the tickets back in March and there were very few trains available with unoccupied bike spaces. The train we have booked from Stuttgart is the RE90. There is another 2 hours later and in hindsight this would have been a better option. With our planned connection time being so tight I don't think a refund will be possible and so I guess we just have to give it all a go and pay our way out of whatever happens! I'll aim to post an update on how it went. Thanks again to you all for posting.

Re: Stuttgart railway station

Thanks all. Some useful info. there. Hopefully the linked plan is current but I have read that the station is undergoing a major refit to make it a non terminal station.
We booked our tickets in March and struggled to find trains with available bike spaces. Unfortunately they have changed the departure time for the train leaving Stuttgart and so we now have a shorter time to transfer.

Stuttgart railway station

My wife and I are doing a 16 day organised cycling tour of Bavaria commencing in Nuremburg. Our plan is to join it by cycling from Europoort to Köln and then travelling by train. We change trains in Stuttgart with only 9 minutes to get from Platform 6 to 15! A tough challenge with two loaded bikes. I can't find any info about station plans etc. and wondered if anyone could point me to info. or has personal recent experience.
Thanks

Re: St Malo to Nice

We did the France en Velo route over 3 weeks a few years ago. It's a great ride but often difficult to find places to eat in the evenings even in larger towns.

Re: Rear derailleur replacement

Thanks again for all advice so far. I was thinking that the shifters would simply move the derailleur to a certain position with each 'click' and that the derailleur played no active part in positioning once aligned etc. I'm now hoping I can now 'resurrect' the original part since buying a replacement seems unlikely.

Re: Rear derailleur replacement

Thanks for the info., I'm glad I didn't place the order. The cassette is a 32T and the cage measures 120mm so long cage needed. I'll investigate the 105 version.

Rear derailleur replacement

My bike's rear derailleur has been damaged beyond repair. It's a Shimano 11 speed RD 6800. I cant find a replacement in stock so would like to know if an RD R8000 would be a like for like replacement please.

Rotterdam to Nimes

Soon we will be cycling the Rhine route from Rotterdam to Basel and from there taking the Jura route to Nyon and then the Via Rhone route from Geneva to Nimes. Our info has mainly come from the biroto.eu website. We will be doing approx 50 miles per day and have hotels booked each night. Has anyone got any recommendations or advice on the route and anything we must see or must avoid! Thanks in advance.

Re: Taking Bikes on Planes

We've just flown back from Treviso with Ryanair with bikes packed in the 'CTC' poly bag and had to sign a disclaimer because of the 'poor packaging'. The bikes wouldn't fit through the oversize baggage x ray machine and we had to unpack them and remove wheels to get them through it. We then had to go 'to the other side' and rebuild and repack them before dashing off and being the last passengers to board the plane! A very stressful end to a great holiday.
Last year we flew Ryanair from Carcasonne and had no such problem.
Thankfully, on both occasions the bikes arrived back intact.

http://tweetedtrips.com/map/42/paul-cycles-world/ tracks his progress around the world. Seems a very useful site for tracking tours etc.
