Re: Cutting down a quill stem's vertical height?

deliquium wrote:I have a brand new Nitto Technomic NTC-225 stem. Unfortunately it's too tall for the 22½" frame it's intended for.

How easy would it be to cut it down to 190mm using no more than B&D Workmate and a hacksaw?

Given that it requires a ~ 45º angle cut?

Anyone done it? How critical is the interface with its mating steel wedge?

(plain Nitto Technomics don't appear to be available in NTC-190 varieties)

I`ll swap you for a shorter one!

It was her fault, she has insurance and it`s a lovely bike; why not get made a suitable replacement made? The cost of it is virtually nothing in terms of an insurance clain. Are you quite sure the frame isn`t damaged?
Giving you a lift home is the very least she could do!

I have looked on you tube and dismantling one looks pretty straight forward.
Do bits break/wear inside these hubs or will a good clean and some light oil get everything working again? Lacing a new one into the old rim seems an unnecessary complication. Are spare parts available and if so where from.
Any help greatly appreciated.
Alternatively if any body has a wheel and hub ready to go for one of these archaic machines then I might be happy to buy, especially if you are local to east Norfolk.

Which gear?

Many years ago when a group of us set off to cycle to India my girlfriend and i carried a Vango Force 10 between us, that weighed about 8.5kilos!

Re: Handlebar Shock Absorption

What a brilliant explanation 531Colin! :)
It has always seems counter intuitive to move a saddle back to take weight off the hands.
I assume core strength becomes more relevant the more extreme the `stretch`?

Anybody seen a geo. table? ....I suspect the lugs are actually made at fairly standard angles for a horizontal top tube.....and have been "laid back" to get a bit of a slope.
So the frame angles might be sensibly slack, or they could be a compromise too far....depending on fork offset.

Clever! Obvious when you know! That`s why the BB is not lugged then, the chainstays would not be horizontal if it were.

I bought a Nitto Lugged seatpost (27.2mm dia, 40mm of setback) to go on my (74 degree seat tube) Raleigh.
I love the look of it as well-

Re: 32mm tyres on a 13.2mm (internal width) rim?

I`ve just put a Vittoria Hyper 37/35(?) onto a front Mavic Module E2 (Green/red label) rimed (36h/LF hub) wheel which i want to put on my recently acquired Bridgestone.
The tyre, inflated up to about 60psi measures in at just under 35mm width; what does anyone think of this combination, am i pushing it? (bike virtually unloaded apart from my near 90kg! )
I was surprised that the sides of these rims are only just under 2mm thick despite having had use.

Re: British Eagle Richmond; what steel?

`Hi-tensile`i suppose then.
As in another running subject ( viewtopic.php?f=5&t=117623 ) The Giant is noticeably light when bare but has a heavier fork and stem (1 1/4" compared to 1") I also found it necessary to add a (quite `lumpy`)`suspension` seatpost to the Giant to smooth out tow path riding which this British Eagle doesn`t need. The real weight difference starts becomes less.

British Eagle Richmond; what steel?

I was gifted an identical model to this recently-
It actually rides quite nicely (I`ve been mainly riding an oversized aluminium framed Giant hybrid for some time by comparison)
Seatpost dia is 25.4 (1"), top and seat tubes both 1 1/8".
Is this likely to be plain gauge CrMo 4130 or not even that? It looks very similar to a Raleigh recently on sale here that looks about the same era.-
