I was looking at one in Evans the other day and I'm pretty sure it has a pulse mode.

It doesn't.

Re: B&M Luxos U - first impressions. UPDATE lamp failure

I got mine October 2014 and no problems, it has been very useful. In the past I carried a usb battery pack to charge my iphone when on long rides (as I use GPS) but no need now, the Luxos U keeps it at 100%.

Re: Angry Driver 18+

My advice is not to watch it if you have blood pressure issues. I really can't see what the cyclist has done wrong, the 4x4 driver obviously has some serious anger management issues, he probably goes home to kick the cat. road.cc article says he was fined for a public order offence. How about using a 2 ton vehicle as a weapon?

Why are there so many people needing somewhere to live? Net migration of 300k per year into UK perhaps?

There is nothing green about wanting to build 500,000 new houses.

Re: Unbreakable Flask

I have an Elite DeBoyo which fits in a bottle cage. No rattles when using my tight-fitting plastic cages. It comes with two tops, one is a normal metal flask top and the other is a plastic drinking top, both are insulated but the plastic top should only be used with cold liquids (in my opinion).

Be extremely careful if you are using the closed path after dark.

I'm informed that the diversion signage is marked "pedestrians" with no mention of cyclists, not even of them dismounting to follow the same route. I'm also informed that the kissing gate at the entrance to the Country Park has been left in place when it's removal was promised  . A further exchange of e-mails has begun.

Thanks for the tip! I hadn't spotted that in the dark. :o

Re: Shared paths road works and red cyclist dismount signs

gaz wrote:The Highways Agency are repairing a shared use path near me at the moment resulting in its closure to cyclists and pedestrians. The diversion is through an unlit, muddy, potholed Country Park because that's safer than using the lit smoothly paved road.

Cyclists who use cycletracks (in this case as an alternative to an 8-lane pseudo-motorway) can't be diverted onto an adjacent unclassified minor road as they might not be used to riding on roads.

The bulk of the diversion (all but 15 yards out of 1/4 mile) is on a route through the Country Park approved for shared use. The Highways Agency want cyclists to dismount on the diversion for the safety of both cyclists and pedestrians as the diversion route isn't considered suitable for road bikes (which apparently can't be ridden on roads either  ).

The path can still be used, unless they've dug it up since last tuesday. I ignored the signs as the dirt? path through the park didn't look very appealing. I'm normally going through there after dark though, not much chance of meeting an angry road worker at 7pm.

Re: B&M Luxos battery charging

Yes. When you have the light on, there will be less power available for charging. I find that sometimes the red led will not come on at night, until I turn the light off and back on again, then the red led stays on for the rest of the ride (although it wouldn't charge much for long unless I'm on a fast downhill section).
I have two rear lights connected so that will draw more power too, one of them is the new secula plus, which is a lot more effective (and takes more power) than my old seculite.
This is similar to my rear setup, but I have a braketec plus.

Re: How do you keep hands and feet warm enough to function?

I use "Gore Bike Wear Power Windstopper Softshell Gloves" which keep my hands warm and I don't feel the wind through them at all. Most of my riding has been between -2 and 5C, nothing colder yet.
For shoes/boots I have "Northwave Celsius Arctic GTX Boots 2015", together with Mavic toe warmers and sealskinz medium weight long socks.
I also fitted a pair of fleece insoles and the combination seems to be working so far. The socks are amazing, expensive but amazing.

Re: Law Change For Pedal Reflectors

I have stuck reflective tape on my SPDs but it would be impossible on my SPD-SLs. My shoes have reflective bits on the toe and heel which I think would, or rather should, satisfy the law.

Re: Why is cycling addictive?

It has certainly taken me a while to become addicted. In previous winters I would find the preparation before an evening ride a right faff. Checking tyre pressures, filling water bottles, trying to find my special cycling socks in the airing cupboard, special shoes, special shorts, special jacket, ooops I can't find my special base layer, get frustrated, wonder if it's all worth it, step outside, f*** me it's cold. Decide to stay in and have a couple of beers instead :(
A quick calculation revealed that the difference between staying in and going out was approx 2000 calories. :o

Now I have a few spares of most clothing items so the preparation stage goes much more smoothly. This winter I've been going out when the weather is dry, with mudguards it doesn't matter if the roads are wet, just as long as it is not going to rain on my ride. Having the right equipment makes a big difference to the enjoyment of a ride, the Luxos U is a pleasure to use in the evenings on the deserted country lanes and since getting a decent pair of sealskinz socks and Northwave GTX winter boots I am really enjoying going out on the freezing cold evenings. Having a set of Continental Winter Contact II tyres is making me look forward to more ice and perhaps some snow too as I've never cycled in the snow. :)

Losing 24 lbs in the last couple of months is also a huge motivation to get out, I see the number on the scales dropping every couple of days and I feel so much better about myself.

Retro reflective reflects mostly directly back to the light source, so it won't spread it around like you hope it would.

I found it quite distasteful.

I've actually got those spoke reflectors on my hybrid just because I like the way the whole wheel disc lights up when it's spinning!

I prefer them to those little reflectors that clip between two spokes.

I have them too and I think they're brilliant! (but I didn't like the promotional video with the bent wheel and careless driver)
I've jutst bought another set because the ones on the rear are quite dirty and it's not coming off easily. Might swap them over and pop the dirty ones in the dishwasher.
