Racks for touring bike
I have a Surly Long Haul Trucker and am looking to buy front and rear racks. I like the racks by Surly but they are a bit expensive. Does anyone have any suggestions please.

Big Size Cycling Clothing from Aerotechdesigns
I cannot rate this company from the USA highly enough. As a big guy trying to lose weight I have found it almost impossible to get cycling gear that fits. We are constantly being told that cycling is a good way to lose weight and I entirely agree. That sentiment however has not percolated down to manufacturers in the UK. Even the CTC only offers a 44inch chest size as its largest jersey. I have also had problems in obtaining gear from local bike shops. Both shops are part of chains. I ordered a backpack from one shop which was a make that they stocked. After two weeks it hadn't arrived and they didn't know when it would come in. In another shop my son ordered a Ridgeback Voyage and we are now getting on for three weeks since he did so. No wonder people resort to the internet and in my case further failed to the USA.
I placed an order with aerotechdesigns for two pairs of shorts and a jersey. I chose the international economy shipping option as opposed to the priority option which would have been more expensive. I received my goods six days later. I will now use this company for all my clothing needs in the future.
The manufacturers and retailers in this country need to up their game as they are not fulfilling the requirements of all cyclists and in some cases not even giving a good service.

Thanks for your kind comments Erwan. It's not me with the hi-vis beanie. I never go out without the old helmet to protect my brains!

Re: Cycling in Aberdeen (Video)
Thanks for posting this youtube. I have only just got back to pedalling after a break of too many years and an injured knee. I moved to Aberdeen six months ago and ventured out along part of the Deeside Way for the first time last week. Your video has inspired me to get out to explore the city and the shire (hills allowing!). The first part of the video looked familiar to me, is it anywhere near Rosehill Drive where I stay? Also, be careful with security as I had two mountain bikes stolen out of my locked garage recently. Fortunately, the thieves weren't interested in my tourer. So if you see a fat old guy out and about on a Surly Long Haul Trucker (possibly pushing up a hill) give me a wave!

Re: Anyone recommend any good books?
I've just finished 'Cycling to the Ashes' by Oli Broom. I thoroughly enjoyed this book as I also enjoy cricket. The book is an account of Oli's ride to Australia from London to see the Ashes Tour which was won by Andrew Strauss's side. Well worth a look!

Re: Ebay - Highonbikes
Oh dear, am I going to rain on the parade. I've just noticed that Shimano M540 pedals are £7.00 cheaper in Chain Reaction Cycles than in Hignonbikes. Maybe it's a seasonal thing.

STUART CYCLES, Forres, Moray, Scotland
I just want to reccommend Stuart Cycles of Forres in Moray. There is a very knowledgeable staff there who go out of there way to help. I have returned to cycling after too many years. I am middle-aged and well overweight. When I went into my nearest bike shop there was a very condescending attitude from the staff. It was as if I had no right to be contemplating getting on a bike again. However, at Stuarts they were brilliant with sympathetic advice. They also brought me up to date with what had happened in cycling since I used to take part in this great sport. The result was that they received my custom in the form of a purchase of a new bike with many accessories. The bonus came when my son was also impressed with Stuarts and he also bought a bike. You just can't beat friendly service which is backed up by expert knowledge and a good workshop.

Re: Should I just stick with 26" wheels?
I have a specialized rockhopper 29er and absolutely love it. However, I also have a rather nice retro Bontrager Privateer S which is obviously on 26" wheels. I like them both but there again as I'm 55 years old I don't hurtle down death-defying mountains etc. I wonder if your local bike shop or fellow mountainbiker could give you a go on a 29er to help make up your mind. I certainly have no regrets getting a 29er.

Thanks gordy. The only problem is I don't have hair for the wind to blow through! I will however have the smile on my face.

Re: Hi, Newbie coming back to cycling.
Thanks al much appreciated. Since posting I have purchased a rather nice Surly Long Haul Trucker from a fellow forumite who lives in my locality. A thoroughly nice chap with a nice collection of machines. It will take a bit of getting used to the new bike but I'm looking forward to it!

Hi, Newbie coming back to cycling.
Hi everyone, I am a 55 year old overweight and unfit guy. Recently bought myself an MTB and have been out and about to try and shed the pounds. The choice of MTB was a harking back to my past when I did a fair bit of mountain biking. I must admit that I am enjoying being out and about on the MTB bike again but feel that I fancy a touring bike. Maybe it's an age thing.
