Dawes Super Galaxy price shock

..... of shock when I noticed that the 2015 Dawes Super Galaxy had an RRP of £2000.

To say I'm dumbfounded would be an understatement.... I've mentioned this before but its worth mentioning again. Going through the spec you find a mass of super cheap components that might very well do the job but apart from giving Dawes a stratospherically stellar profit margin should buyers have the word MUG branded on their foreheads?

Mavic A119 Rims = £15.99
Shimano RD-M771 Deore XT rear mech = £36.99
Shimano ST-4603 = £124.99
Shimano BR-CX50 brakes = £19.99

All of the above prices are retail INC VAT that google has thrown up for an average buyer NOT the EX VAT volume Trade prices that Dawes is paying.

It appears that Dawes is trying to hide behind the Reynolds 853 frame but accepting that a low volume independent frame builder is going to charge a good chunk of hard earned for such a frame a manufacturer of Dawes size is going to charging around the £500 mark.

So again I ask WHERE does the £2,000 Dawes is charging for a 2015 Super Galaxy actually going?

anyone care to explain Dawes corporate suicide logic ?

I'm not saying don't do this route but having done it I definately wouldn't choose to do it again. Firstly the ferry was £30 in each direction and it leaves at a very unsociable 11pm meaning either a long wait in Newhaven which is a bit of a dump (sorry if you live there) or approaching at night along fast twisty country type roads. By the time you factor getting up to the ferry lounge getting settled in and the fact that your woken 45 minutes before docking with a VERY loud fog horn ( In my drowsy state I thought we were sinking!) getting any sort of worth while sleep is futile. Also you disembark at 4am which again means cycling in the dark feeling sleepy i.e. crap and seeing nothing or sleeping outside the closed Dieppe ferry terminal till light and getting moved on by a bemused cleaner. Only benefit was fresh coffee and a delicious croissant in a Dieppe town.
Anyway thats my tuppence worth!

Re: Female Cyclist Death In North London

I passed the scene a few minutes after the emergency services had got there. I'm not going to give my view or apportion blame or comment on what did or didn't happen until the coroners report has been published BUT would like to say that that corner is a particularly nasty one.

I cycle commute past it daily..... I know of the shop but couldn't at this point tell you what the position is re: has it gone bust. Can swing by there in the morning to see if there are any obvious signs of anything.

Route London to Southend on Sea

Anyone care to offer any thoughts on a nice New Years day cycle route from north London to Southend on sea coming back a different way?

Google offers the A13!
Thanks

A valid question?

Have now decided that my next bike WILL be a Specialized.... Roubaix???

While doing the research I came across lots of questions on various forums asking the question should I get a Roubaix or Tarmac. Was wondering if it was a valid question insofar as is the geometary really that different to make a noticable difference?

It turns out that some Pro's prefer to race on a Roubaix rather than a Tarmac.

It appears its only broken bones and involved crossing the road rather than bike. Not nice but could have been worse.

Re: bbc i player,scottish audax

Watched it on my phone this morning. Two things of note... 1. Proof that the sun does sometimes shine in Scotland
2. No women riders.

Would like to have seen a bit more of the mental side of doing long Audax's. Am thinking of doing a 100k when the weather improves and from there I'll see.

Re: trek madone stolen or not

I think your jumping the gun some what..... its mid december and the kids are going to want father Christmas to visit in a couple of weeks add to that the harsh economic climate with bills going up and up. Its not out of the relms of possibility that with a few short term cash flow issues a known value item is a good way to generate some cash. If your going to buy it back why take the cadence sensor off or maybe the owner forgot about it. I've accidentally left my 810 on bike while I've been shopping. Speak to the shop by all means but the finger pointing at this point is in my view unwarranted.

Re: Edge 1000

Thanks all for the replies.....
Looked at the mobile phone option but 2 things struck me with going down that route
1. New phone would mean new case and potentially new sensors i.e my current phone has Ant+ my next phone might not.
2. Its not a particularly 'cheap' option once you add on the cost of a case £30, battery pack £30 and app £5 especially when the Garmin option is around £75 and less hassle.

I did end up getting an E1000 performance edition for £372 which once seems good value even without pricing in a cost factor for the phone.

1 thing I wasn't able to find out was how good phone gps is in relation to accuracy in difficult situations and type of recording i.e 1 second or smart recording.

Edge 1000

Been thinking of getting one for a bit as I hate the 810 with a vengence.

Garmin has incresingly been releasing half baked stuff of late and was wondering if the 1000 was a usable bit of kit especially the navigation.

Any thoughts appreciated.

pliptrot wrote:The same money for a bike as a new car? No problem, Sir. Don't forget the multiple sets of carbon wheels (deep rimmed and shallow according to the wind) and the matching mountain bike. And the $400 shoes (wot, no leather?) and the Rapha clothing, of course. How much????

Sorry but that leaves a bit of a bad taste in the mouth (so to speak). If people earn it surely they're entitled to spend it however they wish. I know a couple of people with every expensive bikes and average jobs who got them through hard saving and skimping on other things. Your being horribly judgemental.

10k @ 12mph is 31minutes 5 seconds. Current WR is 26 minutes 17 seconds. Trust me thats a HUGE gap both physically and mentally. I suspect that if a person puts there mind to it the former is doable.
