Re: adjust Saddle fore and aft

bikepacker wrote:Slight variation on this subject. In the olden days (well at least 50 year ago) wasn't there a belief that the distance between the front of the saddle to the stem, should equal the length of the forearm from the elbow to the fist? Or something like that.

Yes , I've used this technique on all my bikes....elbow touching the end of the saddle nose...then hand outstretched towards the handlebars - then add the thickness of 2 fingers and thats right for me.....it used to be four fingers when racing.
if you find you are wildly different when you measure yours than there might be something wrong with the saddle position.

Re: Garmin Edge Touring

Penfolds11 wrote:Going back to the OP, are you planning an off-road part of your route? When I plan a route in Garmin Connect, there is a check box within the right-hand menu panel called Stay on Roads.

About a mile from my house there is a lane which is "mapped" but the small alleyway from the nearest road to the lane isn't mapped so if I create a route going that way, and forget to uncheck the Stay on Road box, Connect will route me back past my house onto the main road and another mile out of my way to the point where the alley joins the lane (if you see what I mean...). Once the box is unchecked it will allow me to mark a route the 10 metres along the alleyway to the lane.

So double-check that the Stay On Road box is unchecked. If that works, then you can re-check the Stay on Roads box to continue your route along mapped roads/lanes/bridlepaths etc.

Yes, I have found the same...Ive made three routes up using that technique and they appear to have been sync'ed to the Touring when I plugged it in to the computer via USB. Ill try to ride these at the weekend and see what happens.
If this works then its doing what I want. Its a bit disappointing that the unit itself can't produce sensible routes. i don't want to spend more than I already have - especially if the more expensive models still have shortfalls. Importantly the device will track exactly where I am when on a ride so thats the most important thing for me.
The satnav in the car doesn't use the same route that I would choose....but a few extra miles in the car doesn't matter as much.

Re: Garmin Edge Touring

chocjohn9.....I'm sure you are right!

though having gone off course on the C2C recently -adding an extra 6 miles before the Hartside climb - I think I need a bit of electronic assistance.

I've found that you can plan routes and upload them from the Garmin web site and application - works much better than planning on the unit itself.

Thanks for your attention to this!

Garmin Edge Touring

I've just bought one of these....and when I plan a route it randomly adds extra loops....even when Ive added a point only 1/2 mile from the last it just double backs on itself and creates an extra 8 mile loop.....can anyone help?

Re: Solo C2C

Pete, that looks very interesting,....thanks......is the prevailing wind being against you a problem regarding E-W......or would you totally disregard it as an issue?

Re: Solo C2C

absolutely no problems.....I had spare tubes, spokes and tools etc but thankfully didn't need any of them.

I think Ill do it again next year as my Son in Law wants to do it so Ive said I'll go with him, Im also on the lookout for similar challenges.

Re: Solo C2C

well I finally did it....over 4 days - Friday am train to Whitehaven, then pm to Keswick, then to Alston on Saturday, Consett on Sunday and finally to Tynemouth and then back to Newcastle station to get home.
I would recommend that pace to anyone who wants to enjoy. If you adopt all the steep climb options then the ride will fill your time....it certainly filled mine.
I would also recommend topaz attention to the profiles of the climbs in the guide as the map doesn't indicate the really steep climbs.

Thanks again for all the help posted here...it was the most enjoyable ride I've ever had.

Re: Comfortable saddles

It also depends on how bent over you are....if you adopt an aggressive bent over position you need narrow, if relaxed upright you need wide.
This is because the width of the sit bones is narrower at the front than the back of the pelvis and you need the saddle to match.

I have a B17 narrow on my Pinarello and a standard B17 on my Thorn Sherpa - a narrow saddle on the Sherpa is uncomfortable but I can happily use a narrow flite titanium on the Pinarello.

I hope that helps?

Re: You Are A Bunch of Frauds

I've not ridden my Pinarello aluminium monviso bike hardly at all since I bought a Thorn Sherpa.....which is just so comfortable.
But this week I've taken them both out -enjoyed both but the Sherpa more.
As for speed the Pinarello gives me an average speed normally around 16-17mph and the Sherpa 12-14mph......I 'went for it' down a local hill on separate occasions this week - pedalled like a mad man to see how fast I could go - Pinarello 38mph / Sherpa 41mph (the sherpa was also a lot less frightening).

Re: Solo C2C

I've now booked my B&Bs...just need train tickets now...
my plan is
day 1 -train to Whitehaven then cycle to Keswick
day 2 - cycle to Alston
day 3 cycle to Consett
day 4 cycle to Tynemouth - then back to Newcastle train station

day 3 looks a bit easy but it will be following the toughest day of Keswick to Alston.

Re: 'Cyclists Dismount', should we?

I believe blue background signs are obligatory.....they are 'must do'
Such as direction signs on one way streets and roundabouts.
I doubt if the parking sign above is an official road sign.
I think the intension of these cyclist dismount signs is intended as an instruction, but I for one will ignore them.
Planners seem far too keen to direct cyclists as second class road users....Perhaps equivalent signs for motorists would read....GET OUT AND PUSH
