Re: Halfords

Not related to the earlier posts emphasising closures, but I thought I'd post this as a positive experience of their Grantham store.

The disc brakes on my 10 year old Boardman Comp have been making a dreadful noise for quite a while now and as I know little to nothing about disc brakes I thought I’d drop it in to Halfords. It seems that to get Halfords to do anything bike service wise you need to go through the ‘gate’ of booking online a Free Inspection and then I assumed likely book in a service appointment.

Having got to the shop and explaining that I only really wanted the brakes looking at the mechanic was most obliging and having nevertheless done the cursory check announced he could overhaul the brakes there and then while I waited. 30-40mins later, all done with everything including pads and rotors taken apart cleaned up and adjusted, and I’m now back to quiet brakes. A token fee charged. The shop was relatively quiet but I was very impressed by the flexibility and willingness shown by the staff – something I wasn’t necessarily expecting from a chain like Halfords.

Re: Recycling helmets (helmets sub-forum)

Hi. I landed on this having searched the Forum for advice re what to do with my old helmet I have just replaced with a new one. The title at least seemed promising? Unfortunately the thread seems to head off into the usual quagmire of whether helmets are a good idea and testing regimes and I am not much the wiser.
Can anyone simply advise if it's possible to put helmets into recycling, or whether it needs to go into the general waste? Alternatively I think I read somewhere that emergency services might gladly receive them for training purposes - re cutting helmets off accident victims? I don't know how correct or widespread that is?
Suggestions for the final fate of my Specialized helmet appreciated. Happy cycling.

Re: Holland Bike shop online failed deliveries?

Yes. I must admit I put my order in, in anticipation of complexities that may emerge from Brexit. I thought (correctly) that potential for delays over posting during the holiday period were the lesser of risks. Sadly, they seem to have pulled the plug. Hopefully just temporarily. I've found it, and its Continental brethren are a good place to go for a choice of lights with fitting options that aren't necessarily "on trend" and available in our domestic marketplace.

Re: Holland Bike shop online failed deliveries?

I ordered a battery headlamp from Holland Bike Shop on 22 December, arrived 4 January. Well packaged, more than happy. Good service.

Re: A positive thread

Thanks to Furlough and the glorious weather I've just achieved my highest monthly mileage since my records began - and I've got pretty reasonable records going back to the 1980s. (My commuting whilst on Student placement in Cheshire still wins.) Little and often has been the key, having managed to go out virtually every day for between 10 to 30 miles. Lovely weather, lovely countryside.

Judging by the higher than ever number of people cycling I've been seeing in the Vale of Belvoir during the lockdown, I doubt if I'm the only one in such a happy (cycling) position. :D

(External) interference with wireless computer?

Hi. I have a Cateye Micro Wireless computer. Not the current model, the one before. Thousands of miles of very reliable use.

I've noticed that in a relatively local village there is a dead spot of about 30m where the speed display suddenly drops to 0, and then recovers. This happens every time I ride past that point. Large houses line the road, but are set back by a few metres.

Any ideas as to what could be causing this interference, as i find it rather intriguing? I imagine a mad scientist working on a Delorean based time machine, or a spy at work :D . Hopefully there are more plausible explanations to be had?

Thanks for the feedback. I'll try not to panic just yet then, and the explanation of the "soft" power is interesting.

Computer only switches on after (un)plugging in. Why?

I have an aging computer, but (touch wood) it does work. However in the last month or so it will not switch on....until that is I unplug the stack, wait 30secs or so then plug it back in again. It then starts and runs with no problems, and allows normal shut down. Then it won't start again until I repeat - as above. I have very poor computer knowledge, but am intrigued as to what is going on here. I wonder if anyone can enlighten me in simple terms?

Meanwhile I am bracing for an investment in a new computer, which is presumably on the cards?

Best Regards

Re: Cycling UK Water bottle ?

I used to have CTC branded* bottles that were bright yellow (and therefore eye catching)and good quality. I always thought they were a good promotional idea, - whilst on the bike at tea room stops parked up alongside all the other riders' bikes. However they seemed to get deleted, I think following the shop transfer to Wiggle and never seen again. A pity. I'd happily pay a few £ for a decent bottle that promotes my membership of Cycling UK.

* It was the newer CTC logo, but that never bothered me - unlike some on this forum who I appreciate will forever lament the passing of the Winged Wheel.

Lets have a Cycling UK bottle back please?

Same goes for bike/mudguard stickers but that's probably another thread.

Re: ITV TdF (Competition) Music

Hi Richard. A belated thanks for this update - due to holiday. How the heck did you find this?! (Do you have industry knowledge or something? ) I was grateful for previous links to the original (extended) theme music re Pete Shelley but had given up on this piece as being too obscure. Unfortunately I'm not on Itunes, but I'll sort something out I'm sure via family, and at least I have a link now.

Best Regards

Re: Rides From Hunstanton

Over the years I have had a number of most enjoyable cycle "tours" of North Coasts (and Central) Norfolk. It is a great place to visit by bike. Wonderful cycling, especially if like me you are not into climbing Alps, or too many Peaks... At Easter I was back on the Quiet Lanes again near Cromer :D

I have based a good number of these trips on the maps available for download from the Norfolk Coast website, - originally purchased some years ago as a hard copy from the Tourist Information in Sheringham.

http://www.norfolkcoastaonb.org.uk/part ... egend/1116

A truly great set of guides and recommended routes. The Ringstead loop includes Hunstanton, but can be "bolted on" to adjacent rides in the series.

Happy cycling.

Re: A positive thread

Scanning through this great forum but a little depressed with looking at moans and groans re: Tractors not pulling over for traffic (positive - weird as they do it quite happily in my nick of the woods, hardly an issue at all), Disinterest in Olympics, The CTC winged logo revisited (again), Chris Evans and the poisoned TG challice etc etc. So thought I'd bounce this one back up.

My Mercian has a new bottom bracket, riding lovely again. Ticking gone and seems smoother. Why did I leave it so long?! :D
Oh and the link a kind poster gave me to the TdF theme music :D
And finally, I'm on holiday in France soon, planning to hire bikes at least one day in Brittany :D

Happy cycling

Re: ITV TdF (Competition) Music

Thanks Colin54 for the links. Much appreciated. The link to the extended theme/video is superb on both counts and takes me back to the days I mentioned in the OP. What a great theme and imagery. :D
