Re: Calculate avg speed on a flat ride

uhhu wrote: 28 Mar 2024, 11:50am Hi,

I am doing a cycling tour and we are being split into groups. To go into the correct group, I have been asked for my "avg speed on a flat ride."

I don't do flat rides, all my rides have elevation. How can I roughly calculate my avg speed on a flat based off of a recent ride which has elevation?
...
If you are concerned to get into the right group for the 1st ride I'd ask if they have decided on the speed bands yet (or if they are waiting on answers to make equal group sizes). Might be that when you see the from-to for each group they are wide enough that it is obvious which group you are best suited to e.g hypothetically say av. sepped Group A up to 10 mph, Group B 10-20 mph and Group C above 20 mph might be easy to work out your group.

Thames Water is getting interesting given their dividend payments, debt and not investors demanding a massive bill increase, in effect customers paying for their failings and dividends. Even where we are now (40% bill increase demand) is going to stir up a lot of ill-feeling through their region even though OFWAT has refused the increase. If it were my decision I'd be fining them for every illegal sewage release until they go bust, let the Gov. buy the company for £1 and keep it under public ownership. I'd be doing that for every water company. None of this "temporary nationalisation" the Gov. are mentioning as a possibility.

Feargal Sharkey was very good in his TV appearances yesterday - knew his stuff (facts), presented them in a clear balanced concise manner, allowed the "other party" to have their say un-interrupted and then countered it with clear, simple fact.

I feel like writing to the water company covering my area asking for the money I paid for sewage disposal to be refunded as they have not been doing what I've been paying them for. Every moderate rain and people have sewage in their gardens (not mine). Been happening since I've lived here (15+ years) and water company never investigates as tiny village into ditches into small river so no monitoring guages.

That's going off into the minefield of using a phone vs using a dedicated GPS as the nav device - there are pros and cons to both but as a general rule, the phone and GPS work together, linked by Bluetooth so the GPS uses the much more powerful processing power and connectivity of the phone to do route calculations initially and then the navigation can be left to the usually smaller, neater, much more robust and weatherproof GPS unit.
...
My Garmin does off-course route recalculations locally on the GOPS device, not on phone. When I'm out for a ride (either with or without directions) GPS device works alone. Also can do route creation locally on the GPS device without phone connection.

Re: UK Leasehold Changes?

I'm not following the detail of the bill's progress but from the Lords today
So the secretary of state clearly wanted to see a scrapping of the feudal leasehold system and a capping of ground rent to peppercorn rents....
Thing is, if it is legal/acceptable to retrospectively change contracts, why can't we retrospectively change the PPI contracts that are costing us all vast sums, providing inadequate services, draining many public services of much needed funds (and thus impacting all in a bad way), etc. Just change the law because it no longer suits us to be held to contracts we previously agreed to.

More madness as the US (through social media) is now starting to view the Baltimore bridge disaster as a Black Swan Event.

Although reading the article names of those suggesting deep state created it are "the usual suspects". Amazing that these people have any credibility left.

BTW, which bits actually are going to be retrospective now? I know that retrospection on ground rents has been dropped as an idea, apparently because so many pension funds rely on ground rents for income, but I’m not well-up on the other stuff.
My understanding is that Gov./Parliament are still deciding, Gove wanting retrospective but Treasury not wanting retrospective. There seems ongoing pressure from associations representing those paying ground rent to keep the retrospective.

(That from BBC R4 this morning).

I do read them and have declined them and on more than one occasion have refused "We've updated out T&Cs" and have my account closed (eg one specific case where their new T&Cs listed who they would share data with and the updated list included 2 companies I could not accept getting my data.

Re: Why are the general population resistant to getting fit?

With the health aspects of exercise one wonders if an increasingly stretched NHS might start to focus more on exercise as a treatment.

It gets very complex involving health policy, balancing budgets, treatment availability, moral case, NHS charter, etc. most way beyond my knowledge.

But behaviour aspects do (or at least did) affect the treatments you could be offered under the NHS. As I understand it, if you drink excessively then you wont be considered for a liver transplant until you get your drinking under control.

Mental Health help from exercise? (endorphins?). Not a cure but maybe some alleviation for some conditions?

I seem to remember something about GPs being able to prescribe a limited duration course of gym. My local council operates several quite good leisure centres incl. gyms, things like badminton, squash, etc. some with swimming pools. Did that scheme get anywhere? still running?

Re: UK Leasehold Changes?

Nearholmer wrote: 27 Mar 2024, 1:19pm I don’t know the ins and outs of how the decision to make the changes retrospective was reached in this case, but one general reason that a contract can be void is misrepresentation or withholding of information. Misrepresentation, as in false assurances about the way in which landlords would act in future, or withholding, as in failure to give due prominence to landlords rights in sales material, may have been a part of this.
But any existing leasehold contracts suffering any of those issues would be covered by existing contract law and could be voided or changed by the courts - so no need for across the board retrospective changes to all leasehold agreements.

Re: UK Leasehold Changes?

I appreciate the fairness and property availability arguments but isn't there also a case of fairness for the leaseholder?

I fully appreciate changes to law/regulations for future leasehold contracts, it's the retrospective changes to contracts that were legal when agreed and both parties fully aware and having taken legal advice.

Do you have a source for that quote, really to put it into context? On its own it is open to changes of meaning depending on context. eg, as quoted it could also be very relevant to human impacts on wildlife and environment.

(Tried Google but it didn't come up with much useful)

UK Leasehold Changes?

I can understand the Gov. wanting to change legal constraints on leasehold contracts for the future but I can't see justification for retrospective changes to contracts entered into freely, normally with legal advice, etc. that were legal when agreed.

Most people buying a property look around to find what meets their needs, take legal advice, get the opportunity to read contracts and reasearch anything they don't understand, etc. So to have a contract entered into freely that complied with the law at the time retrospectively changed to the benefit of one party would seem very wrong.

Maybe the property purchase price was reduced on the basis of the ground rent. There is much more to buying a property that number of bedrooms. When I was house hunting I could have purchased a bigger better house for less money but in a flood zone and I didn't want to handle flood risks. My choice so I went for less house for more money but no flood risk. People make choices.

What am I missing about the arguments for retrospective changes?

My enjoyment of the site has recently been lessened by a particular habit. When someone asks for help on fixing something they aren't asking for a review of the entire technological and marketing history. That history is often absolutely fascinating and I love reading it and I'm impressed by the knowledge, but I'd much prefer that it was in a different thread or blog because it gets in the way of understanding the responses to the original cry for help.

But it can be a difficult one. eg "Custom Storage" thread (viewtopic.php?t=160418) where new'ish member was asking about contributors experiences building a storage shed for a bike. But OP also stated why he was wanting to build a shed and many responses (including my own) was to provide solutions to the reason for needing a custom bike shed. I felt the alternative solutions useful but they were not answering the OP's question.
