Re: Road 90 between Beit She`an + Ein Gedi, Israel

Mattie those are excellent pictures, 45 C is kinda hot! I have travelled by car between Beit She´an and Ein Gedi with no hint of trouble but perhaps a bicycle may be considered a easier target.

Road 90 between Beit She`an + Ein Gedi, Israel

How safe is route 90 to cycle between Beit She`an and Ein Gedi? The masterplan is to cycle all the way from Metula (near Kfar Shmona) all the way down to Eilat along route 90 (470 glorious kms).

The bit between these two places is about 140kms-ish and I dont think I have the stamina + fortitude to power this bit in one day going hell for leather. If it is indeed safe to cycle perhaps any suggested accommodation in between. I know the route from Mitzpe Ramon (route 40) quite well but as of yet havent quite summoned up the bravado of cycling route 90 along the Dead Sea.

Perhaps someone has any experience of whether or not to cycle this route. Otherwise then will have to split it up into two separate rides. Metula - Beit She´an - Afula - Hadera - Tel-Aviv. Then on a separate occasion Tel-Aviv - Sderot - Be´er Sheva - Mitzpe Ramon - Eilat.

Re: Accessible accommodation along The Danube

Maybe not the best solution is to consider youth hostels along the Danube. Germany has plenty of these:

http://www.hihostels.com/

Perhaps not necessarily to book through the site but merely to have the address and contact details as back up.

Have fun.

Re: A long shot, but just perhaps - Tel Aviv

Bring your helmet along, they are quite strict about this. You may seriously want to consider hiring a Segway, this you will enjoy and the local kids will think you are megacool and high five you everywhere. Best place to consider renting a Segway or even a bicycle from are the excellent peops located in the newish Tel-Aviv port. I left my cellphone behind in their offices and they repatriated it back to me before I even knew it was missing! Sadly dont have their exact location but its behind the main entertainment promenade of port.

But I digress. With a bike it is a great ride along the coast either south or north. The Israel National trail along the coast all the way past the Sde Dov airfield onwards to Netanya. From Jaffa all the way along the coast towards Netanya will net you about 20 miles then another 20 miles back.

Southerly direction along the beach (do stop at the Banana bar for a 30 shek beer, awesome sunsets and great music) towards Jaffa (alighting here could lose you a whole day alone with the sights). With many places to stop for cafe chazak + boreksim. Perhaps also towards Jaffa along the coast be sure to stop at Abulafias by the clocktower. On Shabbos I always head down here and grab a dozen pitas with hummus. Also is a place called Abu Nassans in Jaffa for superior Techina + Hummus variations of magic. You may have to ask around for directions, its easy!

Below is a cursory best 5 of Tel Aviv cuisine:

On a totally unrelated note, I will direct you towards a link of several routes these two guys did across the whole of Israel skillfully avoiding Tel-Aviv:

Variations of what these guys have cycled is certainly worth consideration and on my to do list.

Enjoy the one day free you have in Tel-Aviv!

Re: Crawley/London to Amsterdam JULY/AUG?

The ride from Hoek van Holland to Amsterdam. Take it along the coast all the way to Zandvoort. Great ride, you can pass Scheveningen, Katwijk, Noordwijk with places where to stop for coffee and such. The wind will be on yer back in the PM. The road is nice and wide. Use below route planner to download superior route solutions onto your GPS:

http://en.routeplanner.fietsersbond.nl/

Or the direct route Hoek van Holland - Amsterdam Centraal Station about 50 mile ride. Plenty StayOkay hostels about too.

There is a very popular cycle route planner for Belguim found on Belguim tour thread. Choices, chioces, choices... Perhaps then stick along the coast from Calais - Zeebrugge - Vlissingen - Maasluis canal crossing - HvHolland onwards.

Perhaps try to go the back route to Amsterdam to sample Dutch countryside, beer, frites, windmills and such...

The public transport website may assist if you wish to skip and go by train (bicycles on Dutch trains cost €8.00 and only off peak travel allowed on):

Nice hotel to stay in Antwerp is Scheldesicht. Cycling from Antwerp to Amsterdam have done this several times and several different routes, longest being along the E19 from Antwerp - Breda through to Dordrecht or take the backroad parallel along N263 for some countryside. Shorter will be to head North towards Roosendaal - Moerdijk - Dordrecht. Then direct Amsterdam inland route about 50 miles which is also wicked.

I dont like traipsing from Dordrecht through Rotterdam perhaps as a heads up. YMMV

Bon appetit and party on you will enjoy it!

Re: Train back from Biarritz

I have travelled this area quite a fair bit. From Bilbao to Biarritz by train is easy. From the Atxuri station you take the Topo all the way to Hendaye endstop. You may have to take a train to Donostia first then transfer over to another Topo all the way to Hendaye. This will take about 2 hours to Donostia then another hour to Hendaye. Very time consuming though.

Taking in a breath of fresh air and a tour of Donostia will be well worth your time though, Parte Viejo have an abundance of Basque eateries offering pintxos and my favourite bocadillo lomo y queso (Juantxo Bar on Embeltran Kalea). The Mejilloneria on Puerto Kalea is offers mussels in all sorts of variaties.

Then perhaps back to the Topo station for the final slog to Hendaye. Once you alight at Hendaye Topo station it is a 100 yard walk to the Hendaye main train station. You may even find a train to Paris from here. If not certainly a train onwards to Biarritz.

For a uber spicy chorizo you may hop off at the Oiartzun station and head towards the Mamut supermarket located about 1 mile from the station. The chorizo is called Revilla Picante and is available at the rear end of the Mamut at €11 / Kilo. They also have an awesome selection of Turron all year round. You may also find this chorizo at the "El Corte Ingles" in Bilbao centre.

If you do decide to linger in the area, there is an excellent Bidegoria you can hop onto nearby all the way to the top, where you will find the tastiest water. Bring an empty container to scoop the water up as it trickles from the mountain.

I tend to get quite purposefully lost around Donostia + surrounds.

Hope you find your way and goodluck with your adventures.

Located in Santiago de Compostella:

If you either prefer to let them get your bike home or even to the airport all boxed up.

Have walked Camino Frances and cycled the Northern route along the coast.

Have fun.
