I'll ask at the garage next time i'm passing. Do trucks still use inner tubes? I've been on the hunt for larger than bicycle inner tubes before and was told they are like hens teeth nowadays. edit: I say nowadays… that was probably 10-15 years ago

yes I have, I managed to omit it from my OP but I was thinking to add the long SKS mud flaps to some ordinary bluebells or whatever other will turn out to be the longest (measurement without the flaps) reach suitable width mudguards I can find.

Off the shelf mudflaps preferred if I can find them in a matching width as the bike looks plenty scruffy enough as it is.

I'll be approaching sks and the other contenders for measurements.

Extralong mudguards for wider tyres. Any recommendations?

I'm trying to find the ideal mudguards for my 1990 muddy fox courier comp. wheel size is 26" (559). The road and Forrestry track/towpath workhorse to be.
I want something like the SKS Lonboards to keep the spray off: A. my feet and chain wheel, B. the kids in the trailer/on the trailerbike.
http://www.sks-germany.com/?l=en&a=product&r=mudguards&i=10439&LONGBOARD

Trouble is the Longboards are to narrow for my liking.

Any alternatives out there?
Those of you with cargo trailers, you all run longboards or put up with it getting covered in muck?

After hours and hours on the web the only real contenders so far are:
Planet bike Cascadia ATBs. They are 26", bit on the wide side. More imprtantly in this pic, they don't look like they'd actually reach down further than the Bluemel Matts. Looks like they are hard to get in the UK Anyone got these fitted that could upload a pic?

[/url]
Pic in post no5 Front looks good but the rear should reach down another 3-4 .Where to get them without paying £50 for postage from the US?
http://www.bikeforums.net/commuting/429957-planet-bike-fenders-type.html

Bluemels matt 53mm (not available in 26" but hum ho some of you on here state they still fit OK) don't seem to reach down as far esp. on the back wheel.
Anyone with pics that would show this impression is wrong?
http://www.sks-germany.com/?l=en&a=product&r=mudguards&i=6297801122&BLUEMELS%20MATT

This suggests the issues are the same as for the cascadisas maybe slightly longer=better as they are really for 700c?

There also:

Zefal paragons C50 (thanks to Zefal for actually providing a pic of their product fitted to a bike) back fender bit short and a bit narrow.
I'm tempted to get them and try fit some SKS mudflaps

Flinger Delux: again don't look like they reach as far as I like (700c 50mm wide on the narrow side, 26" 65mm rather wider than i'd like). Anyone got any pics of these fitted to a bike?

Tortec. Don't seem to go down far enough anyone with pics.
http://www.zyro.co.uk/tortec/products/mudg-full

With all of these.
Google Image search turns up pics, but the mudgurards in the pics are not necessarily the ones searched for once you click on the image and read the details or don't have a description so one ca't be sure it is actually the mudgurards or wheelsize of interest...

I'm gratefull for any input!

Longboards are designed for 700c (622) wheels but I have seen pics of them fitting 26" wheels if you cut them down a bit or change the front mudflap for a shorter one. http://www.rivbike.com/product-p/fe92.htm

My tires are too wide for the longboards. I don't want to go much if any narrower than the conti SportContacts 1.6 (about 37mm wide on my rims) that I'm running.
I'm Glad I went to my LBS (I checked holding some ordinary blumels 45mm against the tire) and checked.
I'd have thought that 45mm would be just right for tires that measure 37.5mm wide. But in the flesh it seemed way to narrow.

That would work better for me to be honest - any idea where to book etc?

answered my own question look here http://freight.dfdsseaways.com/dfds_fer ... m_ferries/

That is very very interesting. esp. if it is available on other routes.

Re: Traffic free family cycling routes Scottish Borders

Sorry for the late reply, It was busy 2 weeks for the family. Managed to go to Pedal On Parliament despite the odds. Somehow lost my first reply in the system…

Thanks for the reply.
I will try the Peebles to Innerleithen cycle way once I got a bike carrier, but ideally was hoping for 0-10 min. Drive from Selkirk.
(guess I'd have to move to the continent for that)

Always wanted but never got round to doing the Penicuik to Musselburgh path while we lived in Edinburgh.
Might be worth the drive If i can motivate some friends that live near it to cycle along.

Are any of the East Lothian routes going right along the cost/along a river? Then i would be very interested.

Good rides around Edinburgh:
-Balerno to the Water of leith Trust visitor centre was the most enjoyable when we lived back in Edinburgh but the last km was a bit confusing/tricky if you want to stay along the river. It did require use quite a bit of driving but not having to cycle back was good for the motivation of the boys. We just looked the bikes at the end and took the Bus back to Balerno and collected the bikes on the way home.

-Loanhead to Roslin Institute was nice but on the short side and had to go back the same way as we came.

-Inch Park to Musselburgh was OKish but some very busy roads to cross (Old Dalkeith being the worst IIRC) and in some places not that strait forward to navigate.

-Union canal Tow Path should be good once outside Edinburgh, the one time we did it (parking in Ratho just over the bridge from the Bridge in) I was on foot and the boys got frustrated as i could not keep up. I Edinburgh in winter between commuting hours was OK. On a nice summers day it is just too crowded.

Traffic free family cycling routes Scottish Borders

Can anyone recommend me some completely Traffic free family friendly cycle rides, minimum 5-6 miles, (crossing the odd road is fine, having to ride along the road for more than 20m if a busy road, >100-200m if a very quiet road, is not) in the Scottish Borders. The closer to Selkirk the better as Driving the bikes somewhere kind of defeats the objective. Please mention if it is also Rideable with a bike trailer and if there are significant sections segregated but right next to a busy road (e.g. as in the Selkirk to Gala route first mile being right next to the A7).

Thanks
Stephan

Sorry for the bad forum etiquette and my first post here being a quasi advert.
I could not find an obvious "introduce yourself" thread.
Having learnt of this event taking place with only a month to go i don't want to loose time before starting to spread the word.
I don't want introduce myself here as not to taint this appeal by somehow linking it to me personally.
I just learned of this event more or less by chance and rather late in the day.
I though it curious that have i not heard of this earlier, and decided that I would spend a bit of time trying to drum up support/spreading the word.

Regards and happy cycling everyone!

Moderators can we have single post locked threads in the "People Events and Rides", "Charity and Not for profit rides" and "Charity discussion" sections linking to this thread?
Any chance of making these all threads sticky(s) until a couple of days after the event?
