Re: Aerodynamics - can cycling teach athletics a thing or tw

In practice female distance runners usually do tie up their hair but many sprinters don't bother. I agree that marketing plays a part in sprinters' display, but they wouldn't keep their hair loose if it did slow them down appreciably. For distance runners (800m and up) keeping hair out of eyes rather than aerodynamics is probably the major consideration. The skinsuits which had a brief vogue in the 1990s (marketing again, I suspect) were abandoned on comfort grounds; running generates a fair amount of heat, and sprinters need to keep concentration especially on the start line. Another reason may be that they couldn't be very aerodynamic without restricting the wearers' movement, at least using the fabrics available at the time.

Gretna to JoG avoiding A9 and A82

Any route advice for a trip from Gretna to John o' Groats, on road bikes with a support car, covering about 50 miles a day but avoiding the A9 and the A82 as far as possible?

Re: Frame respray advice

A local graphics shop did a good job on two bikes (a Romany and a Benotto) for me although it wasn't particularly cheap. Both head tube badges were easy to reproduce, though, and I was content that the graphics were close lookalikes rather than absolutely accurate reproductions.

Try http://www.ccnxsports.co.uk/contact (presumably you have tried to get an answer from the organisers already). They are reasonably local, and may well have had a presence in previous editions.

Re: ... why cyclists wear sunglasses?

I bought a pair of glasses from Lidl for £5.99. After about a week the frame broke close to the nosepiece. Calculating, stupidly, that I could afford £5.99 I bought a second pair; the same thing happened again.

With glasses as with bikes themselves there is a price point below which the product is not worth paying for; there is also a law of diminishing returns where small improvements in quality come at a large cost in price (the pros are given glasses in return for having to wear them when they are photographed, so they can be discounted from these equations).

If you don't need vision corrections, the best deals in clear or tinted glasses (though I've never seen pairs with interchangeable lenses) can be found in shops on industrial estates selling safety equipment.
