Number in top line of browser tab

Post by robgul »

I have noticed that my browser tab (Firefox) now has a number in brackets before the Forum name .... looks like : (4) Cycling UK Forum - .....

There is also no "favicon" in the browser tab

Why? - a number doesn't seem to appear on any other website - pretty sure it's always a 4 ... although I may have had 2?

This happens when you have notifications waiting for you to read/investigate...

Eg, you have been quoted, had a reply, received a PM and so on...

Ah - something new every day - but a rather strange way to do things - I run 4 other sites with a Forum (using SMF) and they have more logical notification warnings.

.... but still no favicon in the browser tab?

It's a fairly common design pattern these days. It means that when you have several tabs open you can always easily see new notifications (new emails, tweets or whatever) in any given tab without having to divert from your current activity.

I use https://addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/identfavicon/ to automatically generate favicons for sites without one on Firefox.

Sorry about missing favicon, there is one. I'll investigate.

What are they for?
I never look at the address bar, so I couldn't care if there's a logo there or not.

They're handy for quickly visually locating things in lists of bookmarks, groups of tabs, etc.

Exactly .... and from the site owner's perspective it's reinforcing the brand identity.
