Notifications

Post by Mick F »

I don't want them.
I don't want the pop-up window.
I have no interest in notifications.

When I go to Notifications/Settings, I can uncheck all the tick-boxes and click Submit.
Another window opens and confirms that my preferences have been updated.

Trouble is, the tick-boxes are still checked!

Ok.
No advice then?

Maybe I'll stick with it as it is, but I have some notifications I can't get rid of.
They stay there, even when I go to "See All" and mark them as read.

I can go to "Settings" and I still can't delete them.

Help!
I'm going potty with this.

I unchecked all the options (except PMs and Mods messages) and it seems to work for me. Firefox and XP. Sorry about the "grandmother suck eggs" stuff, but did you happen to click 'submit' at the end of the dialogue - or 'reset'?

Tried both.
I've tried everything.
Deleted cookies, deleted history, made sure I'm not subscribed to anything .......... but they're still there.
If I go to User Control Panel, I can deselect everything and click Submit.

................. but they're still there.

Note the date.
All the same ......... Friday evening.

Just to be sure, I deleted ALL history, I deleted ALL cookies and website data, and I did a restart on my computer.
The notifications as per the screenshot are still there.

Next test is to see if they are on another device.

I only get the notifications pop-up showing if I click on the "Notifications" link at top right. Same on Windows PC & Android (both running Firefox). Maybe its an Apple thing?

Settings lets you chose which one's you'll receive but it does appear that once you've been notified there is no user delete option.

This thread on a phpBB forum suggests that admin can set an auto-delete timescale, or even make sure that they stay there forever .

Call me slow, if you must, but please explain how to "not have 'em". Please? :D
I have looked around, but couldn't see any such option - and I don't think I need them at all...

If you don't want notifications, it's easy to turn them off:

  1. Click on the "Notifications" link, then on the "Settings" link in the pop-up window.
  2. Click on "Unmark all" at the bottom to un-tick all notifications, then click on the "Submit" button to save the changes.

The new notifications system is actually quite handy: for example it can be configured to let you know about updates to conversations you have contributed to, either next time you visit the Forum (by the Notification count) or by email.

It looks like Notifications cannot be deleted once issued, but marking them read means the "Notifications [0]" counter goes back to zero. The notifications you have had remain in the background, but you don't need to look at them. UPDATE: notifications that are marked as "read" are auto-deleted after 30 days.

Great stuff. :D

However, why can't I change my notifications settings to nil?
Each time I uncheck them all, the same ones come back.

Not that it matters, as the ones that stay checked are ok, but I should be able to use the "Unmark All" button.

Also, note that the two screenshots are different. I changed one, and it stayed changed ............ but not the rest.

Actually, I just tried to set my date preference in User Control Panel: Board preferences and after clicking save, it returned to the previous value. I wonder if the database update applied cleanly? :-(

Database upgrade applied cleanly without any errors, as per several test runs done over the preceding months.

I can change my notification settings to be "none" without problem. You do need to remember to click the "Submit" button to save the changes.

Please could those who are having difficulty making their preferences stick post their browser and operating system details here?
