Now listening to Crises, by Mike Oldfield ...
I spent the spring and summer of 1982 on my way too, and in a place, called the Falklands.
I served on RFA Sir Lancelot.
(You weren't far away Mick F )
12 months later I was there again.
PhanDet, 23 Sqdn, FIAGDE.... whatever.
I had a Walkman, with a battery pack manufactured from a 3 cell torch ....
And amongst my cassettes was this ......
Crises ...

Mid December, 1983 my second tour was up ...
Phantom FGR2 mission support.
Funerals of two of ours, John & Tim .. 400 Kts into the mountain.
Mine clearance.
Stuff Various!
C130 and then a VC 10 back home ..
My boss called me into the office, 1st week of December ...

"Sir Lancelot is heading back to Ascension with only 1 engine ... do you want to home with her ? "
For 2 weeks ... every morning, dawn, I would sit on the deck and listen to this album .....
Freezing cold gave way to flying fish and whales.

Acension Island, Wessex Helio off the helideck .. VC10 to Brize Norton .... home on the 24th December......

"Once Upon a Time ......On an Island Far Away, We Were Warriors"

Personally I think Light and Shade is a better album. Except for the track (from Crises) "Shadow on the Wall" (which is really down to Roger Chapman's contribution).

There are so many "completion" type albums from MO that its hard to get a best of .... but i agree SotW ... does not fit in that album ....

Just watched the Katy Perry "Fireworks" vid ..... good stuff ....

But (I certainly did not express myself clearly) - I think "Shadow of the Wall" is a brilliant track (maybe my age/era ... that of the group Family and similar).

I think we may be agreeing with each other at different volumes ... Love "Shadow on the wall" ... but it does not fit in every MO completion .... i suspect I/We have already said this ...lol

I'm going to try an experiment with a mate who knows and likes Mike Oldfield and definitely knows and likes Family/Chappo but will have never heard the track. I'll play it to him and I'm 100% sure that by 1:10 he'll have Chapman and by the end will NOT have MO as the other artist. But if you know the artists then it is not a surprise.

Couple of years ago I gave him Mike Oldfield's Light and Shade and his 1st guess was Robert Miles !! (as he was listening 1st time - which in some ways does make sense to me)
