The local council has a present intervention level where anything less than two inches deep is not a pothole.

Whilst I was once schooled by the local highwaymen in some of their pothole terminology, e.g. edge deterioration, crazing, rippling, etc. I am left wondering what will consitute a "potential pothole". Inch and seventh eighths?

I've seen several reports in the last few days quoting the suggestion that a "tipping point" is being reached with potholes. As I was saying about landfill ..........

As a kid in the Black Country (Dudley) it was never a good idea to get in holes like that. It may have just been on of the unrecorded mine shafts that opened up after being badly capped.
On allegedly opened up in the pitch at Dudley Town FC during a game that was a few hundred feet deep. Several have opened up in the area as they were used as landfill years ago.

As a child of about 5,workmen had a manhole cover off at rear of our terraced house,I decided to have look so climbed in when they weren't there.
To my surprise and fear they put the lid on without knowing I was still down the hole  .

My Mam came out of the house shouting my name, and took about 1/2 an hour to track down where my plaintive cries were coming from, then had get one of the workmen to come back(they were working in the next street)to lift the lid.
I didn't do that again :(
