Europe-wide Route Maps -

Post by ChrisUnderwoody »

Hallo,

Does anyone have any suggestions for good route maps / atlases for mainland Europe?

I'm cycling across Europe this summer and want to make the most of the many cycle routes on offer but can't seem to find a good source of maps - online would be good although some kind of a cycle route atlas would be fantastic!

I can't find anything on Amazon and find the Eurovelo site a little confusing. There are some good detailed maps of localised routes for different countries, but I'm looking for something that can give me a broader overview.

Cheers in advance for any pointers :-)

Just a few suggestions...

- For a general overview of local, national & long distance cycle routes: https://www.opencyclemap.org/
- For route planning: cycle.travel
- Sites that specialise in .gpx files of cycle routes: http://www.biroto.eu/en/ is one example. I'm sure I've seen another one but I can't for the life of me remember it now.

Most of the mapping organisations are national; detailed maps tend to be based on one countries standards. Often cycle routes are shown on the larger scale maps which are a burden for the touring cyclist.. I've used the Michelin France Atlas Routier 1:200k spiral bound atlas as a source. Its cheap but hard to navigate large towns at that scale. In addition cycle routes are not shown.
While route specific guidebooks sidestep these problems, sometimes you want/need to leave the route and then have no map.
A mix and match approach is inevitable.

In the UK Stanfords is a good source.

I use the map.me app when touring overseas, covers all countries down to street level and cycle paths are shown as a purple line, however only when at a large scale, so not ideal for initial planning, but have found them useful when getting down to detail.

Try the OSMAnd app .. looks to show the bicycle routes (when in bicycle mode).. even at a small scale.
This is the same base data as https://www.opencyclemap.org/ and map.me i.e OSM.

I tend to use Bikehike as you can flip between Google maps and the OpenCycle maps in the main panel.
Once I've picked the route for the day, I handload it into my Garmin.
But if I stray off the route, it's no big deal as long as I'm going in roughly the right direction.
