GB west-east

Postby mike#67 » 5 Jun 2014, 1:58pm

I'm looking to do a week's ride across Britain. North-South is too far! Usual C2C too short! So thinking of Pembrokeshire-Essex which looks like the longest west-east route, and at 350km or so would make a nice 5 days ride with a couple of days exploring Wales to warm up (Ive never been out west there). It's a holiday so nice countryside rather than tanking along the A40. Maybe Brecon/Hereford/Cotswolds then skirt as far away from the London suburbs as feasible.

Anyone have any suggestions? I'd be travelling out from Paddington so need to get to grips with Firstgreatwestern.

If you want a good west - east run, I'd do St David's to Lowerstof.
That way you stay away from London.
BUT it's 350 miles across not 350 km.

You could try "Barmouth to Yarmouth" - i.e. the town in mid-Wales to Great Yarmouth. About 320 miles, with a railway station at each end. - maps, journey-planner, route guides and city guides

Thanks for the suggestions. Maybe I mislead my wife as to the distance...
Our plan is Pen Dal-aderyn (near St Davids) to Walton on the Naze, which is about 455km as the crow flies, or 550km on the road. We like the neatness of start and finish at the same latitude. And Lowestoft/Yarmouth would be just that bit further for getting back to London at the end of the trip.
Will be our first self-supported trip for more than a couple of days so fingers crossed.

Did Barmouth-Skegness the other year. Was thinking of Yarmouth, but am quite familiar with that area of East Anglia, so substituted another tacky seaside town. Worked out quite well, including bits of the Peak DIstrict.
