bb30 in old frame

Post by aljohn »

I have a Shimano square taper bottom bracket in a Dolan alu frame , about 15 years old. Does a bb30, or any other system, fit the older, standard , bottom bracket thread ? I ask because I've seen a lot of FSA chainsets with bb30 or hollow tech bb"s...and crucially, they are pretty cheap. I fully expect to be disappointed , I'm happy to use Shimano kit but it's nice to have plenty of choice.

Best summary.

It'll be an English threaded bottom bracket, so lots of modern systems will work. Bb30 is not one of them !

Shimano Hollowtech II cranksets will fit. You will have to buy a new HTII BB to fit one.

BB30 cranksets do not work with regular threaded BB shells.
I should coco.

"native" BB30 chainset yes, but there's BB30 chainsets with a longer axle, also the 386 standard, those can rely on external cups (like a Hollowtech2 cups, but bigger)

Most likely yes, there's a jungle of adapters. You can even convert a BB30 to BSA threaded if you wish so.
"press-fit" is a very generic term, you need to specify the shell ID and width.

Hope do an external bottom bracket that will fit and is available as a 30mm axle diameter, which means a bb30 chainset will work with it.
I have one on a bike, works as a standard external BB(24mm) would.
