ID this rubber seal.

Post by CREPELLO »

So when I was servicing my newly acquired SLX wheel set, I found this thin rubber washer seal just lying on top of my hex head socket set,which I'd been using.
Does this look familiar to anyone?

Not having serviced SLX HUBS before, I can't be certain that it didn't come from the rear hub I was servicing. The SLX do seem a bit different from the usual Deore that I'm used to.

But then again, it could been sitting there since the last time I used the socket set. in which case I have no idea where it came from - except it is almost certainly cycling related.

Suggestions and comments welcome.

It looks like the "tophat" seal from an external bottom bracket bearing.

Except they would be around 36mm diameter. That size would be around the axle itself, they do have a seal on some cranksets that sits between crank (both ends) and bottom bracket.

Numbers 6 and 8 here.

FWIW I can't see anything like it here;

so (unless it is from the back of the freehub body or something) I think that seal may have come from somewhere else...?

[edit; this image

appears to show a thin section rubber ring around the centre part? Is that it?]

cheers

Some early ahead sets used a small diameter o ring instead of the later conical ring. The size is about right. Have you had your ahead set apart recently?

No headset has been dismantled recently. I will offer it up against the SLX freehub tomorrow to see whether the diameter match in any way. Somehow it just looks familiar, but I can't put my finger on it.
