Jonathan, I saw the info on www.gov but wonder how in reality it works. Has anyone actually used it and was it easy to arrange?
I'd guess only a few would use it anyway.
I'm not planning to do it but my son is getting ideas together to use the crossing as part of a planned route.
I'm just a little sceptical it runs all the year and the thread from 7 years ago may be inaccurate today.
We got caught out trying to avoid cycling over the St Nazaire bridge using the free bus service for bikes. This only works in the summer months! To avoid risking our lives we decided against the bridge and changed our route. This has made me very cautious in assuming what is advertised is available.
Dartford Tunnel
Re: Dartford Tunnel
Used it last May, works fine, it's now a crew cab 4x4 with a bike rack, there's a trailer available for groups, though they're requested to book. The car was already parked there when I arrived, I asked if that's all they did, it isn't, they also do some escorting duties and personnel movements, but was told there was never a long wait, though there's some gaps in the times it's available.
If it's running, I much prefer the Gravesend <> Tilbury ferry, but then I'm more likely to be going to/from the Medway area. If it works for your son, it's probably a nicer route either side.

I last used it about twenty years ago when it was basically turn up and go - I don't know how the booking system works.Jdsk wrote: ↑16 Dec 2023, 3:41pmThanks for that.Tigerbiten wrote: ↑16 Dec 2023, 3:33pmDidn't work in practice .... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQsk1r2_jwo

If I'm crossing the river I prefer to use the Gravesend - Tilbury ferry (doesn't run on Sundays or bank holidays).
I haven't done that for a couple of years but I was able to use my bus pass.

Many years ago I went that way en route to Dover. I chose the ferry as I would always choose to be afloat rather than underground and water.
This was long before I had a bus pass.
