Tudor Sport Plusses - Recommended??

Post by brumster »

Tempted to purchase a pair of the 3/4 Tudor Sport Plusses , but can't find many reviews on line. Would welcome some feedback if anyone on this forum has owned or is a wearer of these tights.

I bought a pair, along with a jacket. They’re not very stretchy and became baggy after a few rides, and a hole wore in the seat. The jacket is good, though. I’ve worn it through many winters and it’s lasted well.

Yes, mine became a bit baggy. If I were to buy again I would buy one size down.

I'm a bit bemused by this. (And that's an understatement.)

I wore the Plus Two and ankle-length versions of these for a couple of decades ending in the late 1990s. In those days, they were a cotton fabric with a brushed back. OK in the dry but a pain when wet. I've looked back at some old posts where I compared it to riding in wet dish cloths.

This has had me wondering where a modern market for these might be. I see they are advertised by some part of Condor Cycles.

This footnote made me wonder if they were a bit of a retro fad a couple of years ago

I wear a pair of these plusses for short spring and autumn seasons in between the shorts and full leggings seasons. I recommend them.

Incidentally, a clubmate who no longer cycles has given me a pair of Tudor Sport full length leggings in very good condition, but they are size L and I take XL. Anyone interested?

I recommend Tudor Sports kit in general. I've used it for years.

I have a pair of Tudor Sport long leggings. They are fine apart from the stitching is coming undone at the front of the waistband. I used to use them for commuting but I don’t wear them much now I’m retired, though they are useful for that less specialist look if you are touring, and occasionally going into shops or tourist attractions.

When you say baggy - The whole garment? Including the waistband?

The whole garment went a bit baggy for me, When brand new they seemed fine but on wearing everything stretched a bit. It might be however, that I was between sizes. I bought an L when I should have bought an M.

I wore them and the Tudor "longs" for a decade-ish from 1990. I liked them. Always worn with clip on braces. They got a bit saggy and heavy when wet and being a cotton/nylon mix took ages to dry out - but because they kept you warm, it wasn't an issue for me personally.

Then I started wearing just the "plusses" (new modern ones - but just the same as the older ones x 2 pairs), with long socks, again from around 2010 until 2019. That would have been during Autumn, Winter and Spring, cycling daily and averaging at least 800 miles per month in all weathers. I just liked them. I did buy a pair of Goretex over trousers - but hated them and the clammy legs and noise and general feeling over dressed discomfort. And preferred to ride with wet, slightly saggy, slightly heavier Tudors. Which wasn't really noticeable until I got off the bike, to be honest. The essential (for me) clip on braces made a huge positive difference in comfort and fit. I would imagine they'd feel noticeably Nora Batty saggy when wet without?

I had size Small.

Always wore with a pair of padded short liners - the type which came with some German "Gonso" Palermo ¾ length summer "plusses"

Personally, never had any issue with the quality and no problems with sewing etc - that would have been around 19,000 miles for the latest ones.

What size are you? Happy to post you a used pair of my Small to try out for a month or so?

Not plusses but the longs. They are very cosy for cold, dry days. Also the pad (fleecy material) is comfy. But mostly they're if anything too warm – for modern winters... I think they'd probably be good for hiking, keeping you warm, no swishing, and the pad, while strictly speaking irrelevant to hiking, would in practice serve as insulation when sitting on cold ground.

I've worn (very) similar in the past but not Tudor brand ("Ayel" Alan LLoyd Cycling Supplies). I got a pair of the Tudor longs five or more years ago. I wore them a few times but I don't recall wearing them in the wet. Nowadays I tend to wear clothes that are styled less "cycling specific" and tend to wear Endura Hummvee long trousers (I feel more comfortable wearing them in the pub etc.). I do sometimes wear them as long johns under trousers (on and off the bike) but it rarely seems to be cold enough for that. I no longer wear padded shorts/undershorts either.

I do like the Tudor longs and can't think of a reason not to recommend them (the longs at least - never tried the plusses) but they're just not my style any more.

Been using a pair of these for 3 seasons now. They are a good spring/autumn option. Very cosy fabric in cool weather. Wear them with long socks or short socks depending on weather. Ok in light showers but I don't recommend for wet weather, really soak up the rain, get heavy and take ages to dry. Double seat works for me. I do always use a pair of clip on braces with them.
