Map Measure -Pen with roller wheel.!

Post by lescargo »

PLEASE Anyone have one of these sat idle in a draw?

Looks like, similar size to' those four colour pens that are so popular with NHS nurses..
No ballpoint , instead a small roller wheel and a window to read the indicated distance.

Clubmate, used mine for route writing for AUDAX's, has passed on.

I tried one that was like a pen and it was useless, it had a rubber belt running down the length of it over a couple of pulleys, and it kept slipping. I've had this one for 30 odd years, and it's no trouble. I bought it in Keswick 30 odd years ago, so I don't know if that model's still available, but I recently noticed that they were around as long ago as the 1960s, so they may still be on sale.

I entered “ map measurer” into eBay’s search function and found some things that might work for you. Hope that that suggestion is of some help.
Don’t fret, it’s OK to: ride a simple old bike; ride slowly, walk, rest and admire the view; ride off-road; ride in your raincoat; ride by yourself; ride in the dark; and ride one hundred yards or one hundred miles. Your bike and your choices to suit you.

Thanks to all for your prompt and helpful response.
Result is measurer, £ 5, due to arrive 7th. march.
I had tried previously but only found "digital meters " $ 75/$120

Apologies for delayed acknowledgement.

i remembered earlier this week about my post and was very pleased with replies so so, so slowly typed out replies to everyone.
Full marks from "Age Concern"!
I then went back a screen to check details
And lost it all.

Next night typed it out again but used the icon at top of screen.
Tried to post but --"you need to log in"!!
lost al again!!.

That's what happens to giddy geriatrics.

I did mention reports from first "Fred Witton" lakes Sportif that riders recorded distances were approx 10% greater than route info indicated?
That's what happens with flat maps!

After originally joined CTC in 1958 after reading old copies of "Gazzette" at youth hostel at Red house Crosscliff, Wear Tees and Eskdale , NY moors I resigned , previous 10 years as chair of oldest DA, Northumbria, when oap discount ended.
"fings aint what they used to be.

Have litttle contact but I did suggest that there was potential for huge positive national publicity if CUK provided cyclist courier services for the new, but in fact hardly used covid hospitals .
Regards to all

I just found this simple one at the back of the draw. A freebie with a magazine years ago. I put a white dot on the wheel to aid counting the turns of the wheel whilst rolling it over the route. :D
Could almost cover as a pizza slicer.

Nowadays I use bike hike to measure my routes.

Great to see you’re still active L escargo.
You mention flat maps and the Fred Whitton. Before the FW was established you might recall the AUK ride 'The Fell Roads' run by Andrew Monwell. Start and Finish in Keswick. Every Lake District pass and a supposedly 170km. I rode it once and IIRC it was well over distance

Paulactic flat maps and total distance?
It really depends on organisers relative experience.
Only rode 3 AUDAX GRIMPEURS ,
Late Tim Peregrine's 200 k from Monmouth, Brecon Beacons /Black mountains
200k "Goose-eye Grimpeur Pennines
200k Keith Benton's N/York moors Grimpeur
All accurate; doubtless tried and tested by very experienced audaxers.
Also on 6 L'Tape's perfect accuracy.

I never did ride British SPORTIF, though rode many French events; too dangerous.
I expect eventually there will be tighter control AFTER there is, inevitable, catastrophic crash with traffic.

Previously asked what's the difference between a SPORTIF and an AUDAX?
In a SPORTIF riders are all pretending to race1
In an AUDAX riders are pretending not to!

Bit like a road race with 40 competitors. At the finish there will be 39 hard luck stories.

Do you mean NIK Peregrine?
Never met him, but he was a key part of AUK history. Quick google gives:
1 Jun 2016 — Nik died today after a long illness. Many of you will know him as the organiser of the Gospel Pass event
Apologies if the wrong Peregrine!
