I thought I should introduce myself - Philip Benstead

Post by Philip Benstead »

I thought I should introduce myself.

Philip Benstead - CTC Councillor for Greater London

19, Greencoat Mansions, Greencoat Row, Victoria, London, SW1P 1PG

Mobile: 0794-980-1698

Email: philipbenstead@gmail.com

Age 52

Join the CTC June 1971

Term of office on the CTC Council:

01/01/92 to 31/12/94, 01/01/96 to 31/12/98, 01/01/03 to current

I sympathize with Karen Sutton, Simon Legg views on the CTC council.

CTC is a membership organization, but it must be pertinent to the outside world.

Issues need to be discussed fully and policy decided in an open and straightforward manner.

The policy should be expressed in clear English. The CTC should not sink into the fashionable trap of tokenism and political correctness that will loss in shine in a few years time.

Why I stood for election to CTC Council

• I can make a positive contribution to the development of cycling in the UK via the mechanism of CTC policy. Due to sectional interest, poor direction and internal indifference, we were moribund. We were poor at communicating with our customers. I now see signs of hope, we are at last moving in a direction, some times tentative, but we now realise that there are people out there that want and need to join a cycling organisation that will represent their view of the world of today, and not of the 1960’s

What I personally want to achieve as a CTC Councillor

Encourage the CTC to produce a business plan that:

• Makes cycling relevant and inclusive.
• A positive image of cycling to outside bodies.
• Development of data management at all levels including its access via the CTC website: so it accessible to the various level of authorisation.
• Development of Cyclist Defence Fund, including development of the proposed “The Cyclist and the Law” website/book.
• To have efficient structure of DA/ local group’s management so that those who enjoy group riding are supported and are not marginalised within the CTC.

What I want CTC to achieve while I am a Councillor

• Encourage the CTC to produce a business plan that:

• Makes CTC and cycling relevant and inclusive:
• Reduce our dependence on membership income
• Increase our profile as an advisory body to local / central government
• To protect and promote our right to use the roads and rights of way in safety.
• Encourage cyclist to be responsible road users.
• Make cycle access to both town and country either by road or by rail, for commuting as well as leisure, so that cycling is seen as a serious form of transport as well as a leisure activity.

Your hired. When can you start! :)

Just one thing that I read in your introduction, you say the CTC should reduce its dependency on members income.
Where would the club's income come from if not from its members.

So ask a CTC Councillor about him, ask the West Kent Da, ask the Tour leaders, and ask the AGM about the change to appointment of councillors, why is it on the agenda?

Members have right to know, especially if he is going to post all the stuff above.

Philip has introduced himself fully. Perhaps you would like to do the same Biking Bill?

There is however a point on which Phil is incorrect and I don't think he will mind me saying this. I am no longer a CTC Councillor as I have resigned to spend more time with my family as my husband is seriously ill.

There is one thing Phil missed out from his 'CV'

They called him 'The Shepherd'.

Because he is heart and soul into cycling, and he always looks after everyone in the group he is leading.

Would that all leaders were like him. Many more women would be active CTC members !

Sorry to hear your Hubby's ill Karen, best wishes.

To be honest, am sure Phil has a heart of gold but his way of chatting up women left a lot to be desired back in the 80's, there were many cycling ladies who would have gladly cycled the other way when Phil appeared..
There were many sighs of relief when he finally turned up on one birthday rides with a lady in tow.

eileithyia.

Thank you for your good wishes

Maybe Phil has changed since the 1980's?

I have never felt that Phil was chatting me up when I have spoken with him. You do know where you stand with him. He is quite forthright and you can take him at face value.

However I have noticed that a lot of females think they are being chatted up whenever a man talks to them. Perhaps Phil is simply being friendly and they take it the wrong way?

Phil Benstead profile

I think Phil tries to take on too much. More than most of us could manage.

He is a very good tour leader, and should stick to that. Then those who are used to him and value his 'Shepherd' approach, can book to go with him.

And here's me thinking it was the females chatting me up.
There is your way. There is my way. But there is no "the way".

Karen

I do not know any of the people involved in this emerging mystery, or even any who are talking about it, so this is said in a completely general way:

We could compile a venn diagram with all the various combinations of women who may or may not think they are being propositioned. I am not sure that the one 'many women think all men are propositioning them' is accurate.

If we had 'one woman thinks all men are propositioning her' she might be deluded or very attractive to men.

If we had 'many women think one man is propositioning them' then it seems unlikely they would all be deluded, even if some had misunderstood the intention. It is of course very easy to get a situation of 'one woman wrongly thinks one man is propositioning her and mistakenly believes that many others share her concerns.'

This is why we expect impeccable conduct from those in positions of authority. It helps avoid misunderstandings.

Incidentally, this is what makes the world go round.
