Hayles Fruit Farm and Camping
Winchcombe, Glos.

The campsite is situated 4km NE of Winchcombe near the ruins of Hailes Abbey, and close to the Heritage GWSR railway. There are plenty of road and mountain bike routes from the campsite.

The site is on a gentle slope, but it isn't too steep.
Basic but clean and functional facilities, and electrical hookup available.

The site has a cafe, small shop and a nature trail. The farmahop also sells their own cider which is very nice.

For a tent I was charged £9.50 a night.

it's C&CC policy that they'll always find room for cyclists/backpackers if you just turn up.
Well.... it used to be, but as far as I know it was never a written policy. It was recinded temporarily during lockdown and hasn't exactly been 'relaunched'. I've asked at a few C&CC sites and the responses have always been guarded. My guess is that if the site is full so far as their numbered plots are concerned, they will probably fit in a polite cycle tourer or backpacker on a spare bit of grass, but they don't want it too well know possibly?

Wales, Wrexham, Overton on Dee, Trotting Mare Caravan Site, SJ 377 388

I stayed here recently and it was noteworthy for being very tidy and landscaped, having excellent washing and toilet facilities, being quiet (no children allowed) and good value at £10 per night. It is located on the A528 which was not busy at the weekend, behind a gastropub and literally on the border with England. It is mainly for static and touring caravans but there are some decent sized, flat patches of grass to camp on.

I guess that it may be too posh for campers who prefer more basic, rustic, noisy or lively campsites but if you prefer a shower/toilet block to be warm, clean and spacious and some peace and quiet then this could suit you.

Minor downsides were a list of rules including no washing lines, musak in the shower block and it is probably better to book ahead.

I recently spent 8 nights on the best site I think I’ve ever been on. Loathe to tell you all about it but it would be a shame if you didn’t use it.
It’s on the Coast to Coast walk at Danby Wiske near Northallerton.
Church Holme C& CC CS site has absolutely everything a back or bike packer will need. Superb showers, great kitchen and even camping chairs to use. Run by a lovely family.

North of Strasbourg, on the Rhine. €20ish for two in a tent. Nice ish site with access to a lake for cooling off. Said full when we arrived but once reception reopened at 3pm at least six groups if cycle tourists got on.

Near Speyer, Germany.

On EV15

€28 for two in a tent. Plus side - beautiful lake to swim in. Good showers etc.

Negative - very crowded area for tents on a small field to one side of this large site. It had been very dry but even so it felt a bit unkempt. Most expensive of the trip.

Does that mean there's not a shower? so why the extra charge? or is the 'No' something else and there is an extra charge for the shower?

Convention? what's that then?

Germany- Hattenheim, west of Mainz on north side of Rhine.

Good space being a smaller site than many. €25 for two and tent. Showers €1.

Just off the EV15 with a beer garden. Hattenheim is pretty too.

Saw a rat near the bins…

There are wonderful showers, for which you do not pay extra. Some sites you have to buy shower tokens, usually £1.
