Re: Toe Overlap on Charge Mixer

Thanks Colin. It's all getting a bit technical but we may look into it as don't know what else to do unless we do just put up with it, but it has spoilt what is otherwise a nice bike. Wish we'd test ridden for longer but because we'd never come across it before didn't know to look for it and it just didn't show up in a couple of scoots around a large empty carpark. Like CJ and a couple of others have said - maybe bike shops should be liable to point TO out.

Re: Toe Overlap on Charge Mixer

Colin - going back to your reply to me on Tuesday about the forks, which is what we think is going to be the best way to resolve this can I clarify: I have a medium frame (so 71 deg angle) Mark has a Large frame (so 73 deg angle) so if we had forks with a 54mm rake do you think it would ride more like a hybrid/tourer (which is what we want) and would we quite easily be able to get some forks of that type to fit in something like a 531 steel? (Any ideas on makes and approx cost)

Re: Toe Overlap on Charge Mixer

In reply to rejohn & snibgo: when the wheel is straight the distance from pedal axle to where the mudguard was is 6.5cm (down to around 5cm when wheel is turned) as mentioned we cut the bottom of the mudguard off (which was really annoying as we wanted full mudguards) but are still just skimming the tyre when the wheel is twisted. Both bikes are the same distance though mine is a medium frame and Mark's is a Large frame. My shoe is 9cm from ball of foot to front and Mark's is 10cm. I know a lot of people think this isn't a problem, but becuase we live in a hilly area with a lot of short sharp hills it can still be a problem when zig zagging up. I have plastic toe clips on as I don't like SPD's, but my foot is in the correct position and the same as it would be with SPD's (I will probably look for some small steel toe clips which may shave a smidge off, but most places seem to only have larger ones). Mark is using Power Grip toe straps.

Re: Toe Overlap on Charge Mixer

Thanks again everyone - a few responses to your replies:
To Colin - Thanks for the technical info - if we go down the changing of fork routes I will take your info to the bike shop.
To Thirdcrank & CJ - We quite agree the bike shop should have informed us about this. We have never come across it before in all our years of riding, although from the discussions on here it seems quite common. If we had known about it we wouldn't have bought the bikes even though they ticked all the other boxes we were looking for.
To Scottg - Thanks for the suggestion but we wanted 700 wheels
To Vorpal - I am also a woman with long legs and short body, but as mentioned previously have never come across TO before. Over the last 20 years I have had a Dawes Galaxy, a Trek mountain bike and a Vitus racing bike, none of which had this problem and my partner, Mark has had Galaxy, Giant Road bike, Giant Mountain bike, Dawes Road Bike and more and again never experienced this before.

Final point - in case anyone was wondering, we don't have big feet - I am size 5 and Mark is 7!

Re: Toe Overlap on Charge Mixer

Thanks for all replies and comments so far. Seems some of you aren't that bothered by the overlap and some, like us, are. Would be interested if anyone has any comments regarding our thoughts on changing the forks for some with a bit of a curve/rake.

Toe Overlap on Charge Mixer

We have bought 2 charge Mixer 11 bikes, which we really like BUT what we didn't notice when we test rode them round the shop carpark before we bought them was that there is quite a bit of toe overlap. It is quite hilly where we live and we first noticed it going up a short sharp hill when we zig zagged across and if your foot is at 3 o'clock & the wheel is turned it nearly knocks you off. We have also nearly been flipped off coming out of a sharp right hand junction as was concentrating on where traffic was and forgot to check foot position. We have cut off the bottom of the the front mudguard (annoying) but still just clipping the tyre. When we contacted Charge we were told it was probably the toe clips we had put on, but even if we put SPD's on we would still have the same problem. We are thinking of changing the forks to have a curve/rake on, but when we contacted the shop we bought them from today we were told it would probably make it handle like a barge (will phone again to speak to the mechanic when he is back in a few days as we mentioned this to him last week and he didn't seem to think it a problem). We are only using them for leisure riding/light touring, not racing about on - does anyone have any thoughts on this, or come across this themselves? Any comments appreciated.
