Re: Cycle Paths

Why endanger your life by choosing to mix it with the traffic? Statistically at least, the road is actually safer. You're at greater risk of death or serious injury when using dedicated cycling infrastructure in the UK. And let us not forget that more than 9 out of 10 cyclist road deaths are the fa...

Re: Cycle Paths

I'm both a motorist and a cyclist and it annoys me intensely when I see a perfectly good cycle path not being used by a cyclist. Why endanger your life by choosing to mix it with the traffic? I've heard all about the road being faster but is this worth the risk? When cycle paths don't get used is di...

Re: Why we need a Corybn Govt?

I wish we could largely forget private landlords: we need proper social housing. Used to be called coincil houses. Spot on! If Corbyn's aim was to build more, a lot more, social housing then the bottom would fall out of the private rental market and stop exploitation of desperate people by bad land...

Re: 20st. mid-20's Beginner "cyclist" looking for advice on where to start

I'd look for a used steel MTB in your size. It shouldn't cost a fortune but will serve you until you've achieved some weight loss. You can then sell it on and buy a better bike. When I got back into cycling after a gap of over 30 years I found it tough. What made the difference for me was buying a c...

Re: chain wear; another spot on the graph?

I have, in the past, never got more than 6000 miles out of one cassette and three chains. I ride in very dusty condition during the summer. I swap chains very 500 miles. The old chains get cleaned by immersion in white spirit, washed in hot soapy water and rinsed. They are then lubricated with chain...

Re: Saddle moving

Yes it is a single bolt with serrations. I'll take it apart and take a good look for cracks and that the clamp parts aren't hitting each other. This one was inexpensive but why would a better one (Kalloy?) hold it better?

Saddle moving

My saddle keeps moving backwards. I've tightened it twice now and it's moved again. Last time I tightened it up very tightly and was a bit afraid to go tighter in case I stripped the thread. Are there any suggestions for a cure? The saddle post is about 2 years old and for the first 18 months it was...

Still London (not estuary speak) even though I haven't lived there for 40 years. A Scottish friend (Glasgow) and I rib each other about our accents. I think regional accents are something to cherished.

Re: How do you look behind with falling off your bike

If there is a way I never found it. I'd not fall off but drift towards the middle of the road. It got worse as I got older and stiffer. No problem after I fitted a handlebar mirror. I keep an eye on whats coming up behind me safely.

What on earth would have caused this?
It could have been nasty if it happened when thy bike was in use.

Re: Is this forum really worth getting sacked over?

The job is just a day gig. Every time I look outside and say "what am I doing here when I could be riding?" Then I remember that these long, trudging days pay for what I love to do. One day it will end, I will retire, then I'll be painting my own house, doing yard work, retiling the bathr...

Waste disposal?

My daughter recently had a nearly new cooker given to her and needed to get rid of the old one. She put the old one out on the pavement late on Sunday night. When we left the house at 8-30 Monday morning it had been removed! She has a service road running past her house which is set back from the ma...

Re: Squeaky brakes again

Had the same problem with my V Brakes caused by wear in the bushing. Not helped by any amount of fiddling with the pads or cleaning the rim. Replaced the brakes and silent braking again. I assume the same thing can affect cantis. I ended up doing the same thing. Tried all the cures I'd had suggeste...

Re: Am I mad, newbie tourer

Is it possible you could try a short tour in the UK first. You'll be on familiar territory so you can then experiment with daily distances. Three sets of friends who tour usually make 50 miles a day their maximum. Doing 50 a day over a number of days can build up fatigue unless your fitness is at a ...
