Thank you chaps. The reason I pointed out that I'm not a Cyclist is that in the parallel universe in which I live, I'm often out on the bike 3-4 times throughout the day, which makes post-ride showering impractical. Besides which, (gasp!) we do not have a shower. Furthermore, my clothing is not cycling-specific; it is merely winter-specific.
Looks like I stick with Tom's of Maine ...

Toxic armpits
I am not a Cyclist. I am simply an old git in his mid-70s who does getting on for 2000 miles a year on his bike using it in all weathers just like folk used to do. All is well in my world now that I've finally got my winter riding gear sorted to my liking - except for one thing. When I get sweaty, my armpits stink to high heaven. They really are evil.
At present my solution to this anti-social phenomenon is Tom's of Maine, but although it's very effective, it's a bit expensive. Does anybody know of anything else by way of a deodorant that's as effective but cheaper? Must not be in an aerosol and must not leave me smelling like a tart's handbag

Re: Belt drive "creaking"
Well, I never did find out what was causing it, but after I'd been out on the bike in torrential rain it decided to stop creaking, so I guess it was down to grot on the belt.

Just reporting back to say that I threw all caution to the wind and risked all of £3.59 (including post!) on one of these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/295459020560 ... 3569296933 and it does the job a treat

Re: Cold ears
Cheers. Long beanie folded over sounds like a plan - if I can find one. Hood is out for me: I have a thing about maximum peripheral vision at all times. I keep thinking I've seen somebody on a bike once with something like a headband with extra bits over the ears, which would presumably keep ears warm without causing overheating, but maybe I'm imagining it ...

Cold ears
I am not a Cyclist, but simply a 75 year old bloke who does about 2000 miles a year in all weathers, using his bike for everyday transport like folks used to 60 years ago. At this time of year I switch from baseball hat to bobble hat without bobble, which I believe is now known as a "beanie" for some reason. And all is well - except for my lug holes which nowadays feel the cold something chronic.
What can I wear that will keep my ears warm without making my head too hot or me look daft?

Re: Knee Replacement
Just by way of an update, today is the 25th day post-op and this morning I was able to ride my bike up and down the lane with no problems. Last time it was 43 days, and I have no idea what accounts for the difference in recovery rate. Same surgeon in same hospital, btw.

Re: Knee Replacement
Ta for that mister. I was back to cycling normally in 6 weeks and one day with the left knee and I'm determined to beat that this time. I got the same chap as last time, and so far the only difference I've noticed is that he must have let the apprentice do the closing up 'cos it's nowhere near as neat as last time, but no worries as it'll all even out in due course. Oh, and whoever tightened the tourniquet wasn't taking any chances. The bruising was quite something once it all came out!
BTW, I've had a couple of folk say they can't understand why the recovery's such hard work. I've found the best response is to say "check out one of the online videos of the op and see if you still don't understand ...
PS I'm 76 btw.

Seconded! Then thirded.Bhamphysio wrote: ↑3 Sep 2023, 10:00am ... Do not have this surgery unless you have the mindset to work very hard ...
Nice to finally see a physio admitting that things are actually different to how they imagined them to be. Sitting here 18 days after my second TKR, what you say is interesting and generally in line with my own experience.
A quick question. What's your thoughts on intensive localised massage (with lubrication) of the scar itself with a view to breaking down the scar tissue? I'm minded to start that very shortly

Belt drive "creaking"
I have a 2023 model Gazelle Grenoble C5 HMB, which has belt drive to the Shimano 5-speed hub. The belt's started "creaking" intermittently from time to time for no apparent reason. I'm unable to decide what the rate at which it "creaks" ties in with, but it seems to vary according to gear selected i.e. lower gear, more creaking. The really mystifying thing is that it seems to start and stop as the fancy takes it: I cannot make it start creaking, nor can I stop it creaking once it starts.
Has anybody else met this? I'm minded to try giving the belt a squirt of something to see if a smidgeon of lubrication helps, but I'm scared stiff of thereby reducing its lifespan. Belt is correctly tensioned and bike's done just over 1000 miles.

Meant to say that's out of over 800 knee replacements in the local hospital.

Looks like a postcode lottery then. The last figure I saw for round here (sarfeast) was 7 cancelled in the year to Nov 2022.

Re: Wheelbuilding - is it me or what?
To clarify, The Lady Wife decided that at my age, with my arthritis, and having regard to the fact that I'd have to do the job outdoors, she wanted it taken to the local bike shop. The alternative to the local bike shop would have involved me removing the rear wheel, finding the materials to pack it properly, then paying a courier to take it back to the supplier 200 miles away, paying him to sort it, and then paying for return shipping. (Alas, trying to make it a guarantee claim was a non-starter.)531colin wrote: ↑31 Mar 2023, 3:52pm ... The spokes were ordered from Gazelle, and upon arrival were checked against the wheel. AFAIC they were identical.
