Re: Steel frame protection

+1 for the Dynax S-50. I was recommended it as an alternative when trying to track down Frame Saver a few years ago to treat a new steel gravel frame. As I suspect is the case with many similar products, having plenty of newspaper underneath to catch the drips is recommended.

Re: Kilometers or Miles?

Kilometres for several reasons, but the most prominent one at the moment is to feel more aligned with Europe than the UK.

I regret mine at bit. It was a Wilco (RIP) special. I think there's still enough of it left to see me through a lifetime's need of weighting mudflaps.

Re: Mudflaps. What do you use?

I opt for the damp proof course (DPC) material. Pop riveted to the end of an SKS rubber mudflap to extend the length down to a few cm off the road. I cut a c. 4cm length of steel ruler and either gaffer tape it or rivet it to the end of the DPC flap to add enough weight to stop it flapping around or getting wrapped up under itself.

Re: Folding bike for tall people

I'm the same height as Tangled Metal and also have a Brompton with telescopic seat post. I get on just fine with it, and I have the flat/low handlebar version.

Before you learn the advantage of doing so the unfortunate way, swap the compressed air for a pump, unless you're racing.

Re: Which towbar mounted bike rack?

The Thule racks are superb. Unfortunately my Euroclassic G5 is going to be surplus soon and up for sale. It takes three bikes, but doesn't fold. PM me if you might be interested. I'm in Gloucestershire.

Re: Buy bike box at Stanstead Airport?

It's a nice idea, but if I were in your position the uncertainty of what is or isn't available at the airport would be too much of a risk. Could you find an LBS in the Stansted area would might be able to provide a box if you were to visit them on the way to the airport?

An interesting perspective that complying with the law in the interests of everyone's safety is a waste of energy.

Re: recovery drink shakes

Going back to the OP, I also miss the FGS sachets. For all the whys and wherefores, I found FGS very beneficial to my recovery, but only used the sachets following the hardest/longest of rides when I am also riding on consecutive days and away from home.

I fall back on two options. (1) Simple protein drink in a big tub, such as from Holland and Barrett, and forego the carbs from this source. As it's much cheaper, I use it more often than FGS. (2) FGS in a big tub, decanted into small bags or reusable small plastic container.

Don't get me started on the strawberry FGS disappearing

Re: Cycle Storage in Cirencester

You could see if you're able to keep some of the bikes in your room. Failing that, there are a couple of good local bike shops that might be able to suggest some options. Ride 24/7 is in Cirencester and Performance Cycles are in the Cotswold Water Park.

Re: Front rack Tubus Duo, Tara or anything else?

gloomyandy wrote:Hi, glad it helps. On the mudguard stays I decided to mount mine directly to the fork rather than using the extra mount on the rack because I'm probably going to remove the front rack when using the bike over the winter and I don't want to have to mess around with the mudguards then. It is a little tricky bending the stays around the front brake but it seems to work OK. I decided to only bend the stays on the brake side. I did consider doing both so that they matched but decided that I could live with them not matching!

I agree with you in not wanting to mess about with the mudguard stays on rack and non-rack trips.

Re: Front rack Tubus Duo, Tara or anything else?

I have an approximate 4mm gap to get the 5.5mm supplied spacer into. It'll go, but feels a little too snug with too much outward pressure on the rack. I'm going to fit a smaller make-do spacer of my own, I think.

Re: Front rack Tubus Duo, Tara or anything else?

That's great. Thank you ever so much for the photos.

On mine, the rack is away from the fork, so a spacer is a possibility, it's just a bit of a tight squeeze to get the one supplied into the gap. I'll experiment to see whether with or without spacer gives the best outcome.

You've also given me another thought for negotiating the brake caliper by bending the mudguard stay.
