Re: Cyclist on trial for manslaughter

I ride fixed almost all the time. My wet weather bike has a caliper brakes operating on both the front and rear wheels, while my "best" dry weather bike has a caliper for the front only. This is my take on it from many years riding fixed. If you consider that when you brake most of your we...

Re: Count The Tank Slappers (Motorcycle)

I don't know about computer controlled brakes but they have anti-wheelie technology so that if they start to wheelie the power is eased so that you don't flip them, I think the technology also stops the rear wheel spinning if you crack it open in the corners. They do have slipper clutches so that wh...

Re: "Don't forget to wear a helmet"

This is not a personal... so please do not take it as such To me the effectiveness of helmets in a cycling context remains a red herring as it is narrow, corrupt and biased agendada What is needed. is a wider ranging examination of the effectiveness of helmets ....across ALL at risk groups However ...

Re: "Don't forget to wear a helmet"

I tended to fall off due to overbalancing while riding slowly over rocky, rutted or boggy bits of track so it was probably within the design parameters of the helmet (maybe) but I broadly agree with you about the risk compensation and the hitting at speed. There is, of course, a thought that if you ...

Re: Daily fail does it again

I stopped reading anything written in that particular "newspaper".
It's written to appeal to a lowest common denominator and has been nowhere near any real news.
It makes your life better to just ignore them/it.

Re: "Don't forget to wear a helmet"

I have just stopped wearing my helmet. When I came back to cycling some twenty or so years ago, I started mountain biking and wearing a helmet is a must for that in my opinion, when I started riding exclusively on the road I just carried on putting the lid on. It just felt odd riding without a helme...

Re: Quick route from Kendal to Broughton in Furness

Three options (well the obvious ones!) 1) From Oxenhome - To Sedwick, Levens, Brigsteer, Crosthwaite, Bowness Ferry, Up the hill to Hawkshead, back down to Coniston, Torver and Broughton. 2) Oxenholme, Sedwick, Levens, along the old Barrow road that runs along the A590, Meathop, Grange over sands, A...

I suspect it's more to do with the organiser ticking a box on their insurance policy with regard to their risk assessment.

Re: French Alps - recommended places...?

Another vote for Bourg D'Oisans here. The place is a mecca for cyclists with iconic Tour de France climbs all around. We went 2 years ago and camped near Allemond, just down the valley from Bourg. We did Lauteret/Galibier, Alpe d'Huez, Col d'Ornon, Croix de Fer/ Glandon. There's plenty of others to...

Re: Carradice Super C Audax

I've just bought a super c audax from Spa as well! Came by return post, really fast service from Spa. But it only had two of the three fixing straps in the package. I dropped an email to Carradice and got the missing strap the next day. Carradice customer service is truly superb. It's a great little...

Re: Planet X - customer service

I am angry, not that my stuff hasn't been delivered but that I've been lied to by different members of staff. Firstly I was promised on Wednesday that my order would be processed and that I would receive my stuff by Friday. I explained that Friday was the last day for me to take delivery because I'm...

Re: My new Saddle

I got caught in a downpour, for about 40 miles! My new Spa wharfe got very wet and some of it seeped into the leather from the edges. The shape definitely changed around the seatbone areas though not as much as the b17 I've got on another bike, which went a very strange shape after getting wet. The ...

Re: A6 or not?

I cringe every-time I see a cyclist on the kendal bypass! It's a motorway in all but name but without a hard shoulder. Go through Sedgwick and Natland. Even riding through Kendal town center is better IMHO. Shap is not too bad really, the worst bit is after climbing out from Kendal just before you g...
