Re: ..why there are so many cheapskates here?

maximus meridius wrote: 29 Jul 2023, 5:03pm So twice just now I've seen posts moaning about the "expensive" price of things. £22.99 and £36. Are people really so badly off that those are "eye watering" amounts? They are both within my hourly rate, and I'm not some top doctor/lawyer/whatever.

I despair.

In this forum posters will bang on and on and on and on about how the cycle industry is all about constant change, and how the nasty cycle companies are always trying to sell expensive unnecessary fashionable gadgetry.

It's not really surprising is it?

Horrible opening post. Some of us are on the minimum rate of £10.42 per hour.

Why haven't you gone to Mercian? They've long had a good reputation.

Have Cycling UK offered a statement about this?

Re: Train fares - online and at station - same price?

Just reading this lot hurts my brain. I've pretty much opted out of the tech revolution with apps and I'm finding that I'm increasingly distanced from society as a whole. It'll be a sad day for me when I can no longer rock up at a train station, get on a train (ditto buses) with or without a bike, and pay with cash and get an actual, old-fashioned ticket. I fear that I only have a few years left of this life.

Re: I can't find the forum

admin wrote: 24 Jan 2023, 6:00pm The Forum is a separate website to the main Cycling UK site.

I don't know why the Forum link was removed the from the main Cycling UK site menu, but there is still a link at the bottom of every page.

You could try asking cycling@cyclinguk.org whether they could include a link to the Forum in the main menu again.

You can, of course, come direct to the Forum by the URL https://forum.cyclinguk.org - perhaps you might want to save it as a bookmark in your web browser?
Thank you. I've done as you've suggested and saved it as a bookmark. I still preferred it when it was. I never noticed that there was a link at the bottom of the page, probably because I've never scrolled down to the bottom of the page!
Anyway, thanks for your help.

I can't find the forum

I obviously can, because I'm here, but the old way of getting in, from the 'go cycling' header, to 'advice', to the drop-down folder with 'forum' in it has changed. It's only by accident that I'm here, having searched for forum and the old headers have come up.

Is there an easier way to navigate to the forum? Why has it changed, and isn't accesible by clicking onto 'go cycling' anymore?

Re: Waterproof Cycling Jacket

I've always thought Gortex overrated. A far better alternative in my opinion is Paramo. The styling and detail isn't great, but for keeping you dry both from rain and sweat it beats Goretex. It's not cheap either, but can be re-proofed again and again. They don't make a cycling specific jacket, but the Velez is pretty close and comes in XXL.

Re: Hunting for a new frame

Have a look at Shand cycles in Scotland. I get their posts on facebook and they seem to be able to build pretty much anything and many of their builds are with hub gears (Rohloff, mostly).

Permissive footpaths and bridleways on OS 1:25,000 Explorer maps are marked by orange small dashes and long dashes respectively.

Planet X seatpost are simple, very inexpensive, and are good quality. Their stems are the same. There's no fancy design, just basic stuff that works.

Oh no, that is not good. I emailed membership@cyclinguk.org. There are a number of potential options but this was handled promptly. Good luck!
Thank you.

Re: 70 years of collecting.

For a couple of years now I've been keeping an eye on the 'wanted' thread on here and if anyone posts asking for stuff that I've got lying around I'm happy to offload for free. I haven't shifted much to date, but for anyone who realises that they aren't going to live forever and haven't got anyone to pass it on to, this approach might be a start.

Why would anyone expect to feel individually valued when they’re part of a large membership organisation? Why would anyone feel that they have a one to one relationship with CUK or that they should have? Each ordinary member is - as is common throughout most of life - pretty much a faceless number and (realistically) can’t expect to be much more than that. Membership gets the member voting rights and some services both of which the member can choose to use or to ignore.

Do I lament the loss of the CTC? Yes, I do. Am I happy with CUK? No, not particularly, but it’s a membership organisation and like any other membership organisation I’m but one insignificant person who can choose to either make the best of what it offers or leave - seems like there are plenty of others joining CUK. Perhaps if more people in the past had valued the CTC and taken a more active role in its management then it wouldn’t have changed into CUK. I’m as guilty as others in that respect, but life is busy and you do what you can.
I'd like to echo most of your post.

I think perhaps one way to feel a little more 'valued' is to take part in your local section's rides and activities. I haven't ridden with the local club for many years now, and I feel more detached than I used to.
