Re: Oldest bike

I must come clean, I suppose you could call me a collector. My oldest bike is a 1914 Royal Enfield, It gets ridden three or four times a year. I have a range of machines up to a 2021 carbon fibre Bianchi Infineto. They all get ridden and enjoyed.

Re: Valuation of bikes

The Veteran-Cycle Club is a good place to start, Have a look at their web site contact the secretary and explain the situation. Sales through the club invariably go to enthusiasts who will value the bikes and their history.

Re: Rough riders events of old

One of the classic events was the Balham Roughstuff, A 25 mile time trial that dated back to well before the second world war. Run early March on lanes and tracks in the North Downs south of London. The event was adopted by the Croydon and District Cycling Association when the Balham no longer had the resources to promote it. The traditional course included a couple of miles of unmade tracks, a ford and many hills including a couple of 1 in 6 efforts. Gradually the off road sections were omitted and the event lost some of its character., it survived into the 1980s. I rode it of the first time in 1964 and many times after that and it was certainly a tough event, and that was on gears imagine the pre-war riders on single gears!

Made by Constrictor, best known for their rims. They made a range of parts, both pre and post war.

Re: 1939 Holdworth La Quelda

LLoyds list Holdsworth transfer/decals with no reference to Planet X, The Veteran-Cycle Club hold a copy of the 1939 catalogue on their web site only available to members.
I the heyday of light weight frame builders very few, if any, bikes bikes were assembled to the specifications in the builders catalogue. Riders would specify the equipment that they wanted and could afford, often changing equipment from one bike to another, this also goes for finishes.
If you want to restore the bike to 1939 condition the V-CC is worth joining.

Re: History of Ordnance Survey

I have a copy, it really is an in depth history, and it is massive, 394 A4 pages and set in 10 on 12 point.
Not the sort of thing you read from cover to cover.

Re: Steel Frame Repairs near Derby?

The Moulton Bicycle Club, offer a rear forks repair service, plus a number of spares. I'm not a member but it seems worthwhile if you are restoring.

Re: Harry Quinn track frame

I had the same problem many years ago, too closer clearance on the front wheel, I made up a couple of spacers which I fixed into the front drop outs using araldite. The spacer is held captive by the wheel nuts and the spindle itself.

Re: Rat Traps

The term rat-trap appears in catalogues of bicycle manufactures early in the 20th century as an alternative to rubber pedals, no mention of toe clips.

Re: Fixed gear and knees

I'm in my mid 70s and have always had at least one machine on fixed. The current score is: 1969 Holdsworth with a Higgins conversion axle on 48 x 20 on 27'' wheels, a 1962 Sun on 49 x 20 on 27s, a 1957 Holmes of Welling on 48 x18 fitted with an Sturmey Archer ASC 3 speed fixed giving gears of 72, 65 56 inches, and a fairly modern steel fixed machine on 50 x 20 summer and 50 x 21 winter. No trouble with my knees, I will only wear shorts when it is warm, I personally think that cold is more damaging to the joints than wear and tear.

This is my 1957 Holmes of Welling, here fitted with a SA FM (four speed medium ratio), it now has a SA ASC (three speed fixed).
The position of the lever seems a little strange at first but soon feels quite natural to use.
