Re: Old motorcycle accident and bad knee!

Since l wrote the above query things have moved on! After some thought l decided to purchase a Highpath Swing crank to fit to my left hand pedal crank. I fitted it this last Wednesday and found to my utter relief l could pedal the full pedal rotatation with no knee pain...! Then 'Sod's Law' stepped in. I have been on the main Worcester hospital waiting list for Varicose veins for some time, as the above crash gave me very bad veins on my right leg with side effects! On Thursday of this week the hospital rang my wife to say I was to attend on this Friday to get the awfull veins fixed. They have been done...but... no keep fit/weight lifting or cycling for three weeks....leg covered in bandages, but cannot moan really, the swing crank awaits...!

Re: Old motorcycle accident and bad knee!

Thank you all for the replies. The Dahon bottom bracket housing is ten inches off the ground and my saddle set so high that my toes barely touch the ground...! I purchased short cranks off Ebay, but think l must explore a a small frame and a long? seat tube. There is a large second hand place in Stirchley, Birmingham that might have small ladies frames...or have one made to measure....as l miss dawdleing along on a bicycle...!

Old motorcycle accident and bad knee!

In 1975 while riding my Yamaha motorcycle, l had a car run into me more or less head on,and messed all of my lower joints up! The latest old injury to surface is a painful left knee, which prevents me from riding my Dahon folder, by not letting my left pedal do a full rotation. The painful part is the approach to the top of the pedal stroke. I find that sitting on a chair and pedalling my stationary cycle from the rear, l can pedal normally as my left leg does not rotate to a high position and remains much straighter. Could a smaller ladies frame and a higher saddle position allow me to pedal like l do on my chair and stationary exercise cycle...!? I don't want a recumbrant cycle, just a normal cycle.

Re: Cycling and deafness

I was quite suprised to find this topic on here, as l used to be on the disabled section this forum, until the section was found to make people possibly.... uncomfortable!? In the 1960's l found l had a genetic hearing loss condition, which took decades to reach the profound hearing loss l now have! It does not stop me riding motorcycles or cycling. My youngest daughter went to work in Togo. West Africa which is in the maleria zone! As l am on a blood thinner the only maleria pills l could take was a charming medical item called...LARIAM....lots of side effects! Two weeks after coming home l found l had Tinnitus!! Now decades on l have become ...habitulated... to the Tinnitus...i.e. it become's lost? In the back ground! I too have the wax problem, but my wife was given one of those instruments to look down ear holes when she was a NHS manager. We syringe my ears at home, its quite succesfull...doing that in the shower is a big no..no...infections. On closing l purchased a yellow tabard with...DEAF CYCLIST...on the back, from of Amazon all places! I also use a bar end mirror so l am not suddenly startled by cars passing me..

Re: A possibly comfortable saddle...for all...

The heading of this series of messages to women, who suffer pain while hoping to enjoy cycling while sitting on saddle's of various designs and body materials, includes the word....'possibly'..... The writer of these messages is not a expert on saddles, or cycling in general, but suffers deep pain in my hip area sitting down in any situation, so I felt sorry for all of the women out there searching for a possible saddle that might... JUST... suit their lower body. I am NOT interested in making a issue of the subject, if women cyclists out there read my efforts and it helps them...... GREAT!.......

Re: A possibly comfortable saddle...for all...

Thanks for your reply, Pete... but I don't really know why you replied to a message aimed at women who might have problems with normal saddles. In your message you tell us your happy with your own saddles...that's great! But I was not insisting that you spend £25 if you don't want to move to a new saddle, I was offering a solution to the many woman on this section who keep asking a important message that keeping cropping up.. My new saddle only cost me twenty five pounds, it may work better than my split saddle, but as my wife say's...."nothing ventured...nothing gained"...!!

Re: A possibly comfortable saddle...for all...

Hello cyclists with uncomfortable bottoms! Well, its May 2022 and recently l tried a new saddle on my Dahon Vitesse folding cycle, ...a seat, and l mean...A SEAT....Its called a ....BIKE SEAT COMFORT WIDE BICYCLE SADDLE...it is in effect a wide seat with a depression for your tail bone! They cost around £25 and l have seen them on Amazon. No doubt the pundits will 'poo-hoo' them, but at the end of the day, its YOUR comfort that matters, go on....try one, what have you got to loose, apart from a sore botty..!?

Being a deaf rider.

As you can see, l am a rather rare sort of cyclist, who is also a motorcyclist. When l am away from my home by about a quarter of a mile, l don a bright yellow tabard that l brought off Amazon with ...'Deaf Cyclist'....on the back! I ride a Dahon folding cycle as l need a low cross bar as my joints have been comprehensively messed up by two motorists riding into my Yamaha in the early 1970's! I find most car owners avoid me in a wide manner... (i.e. giving me plenty of room)... or won't pass me unless l wave them past! I have had only one stupid close overtake by a dope in Feckenham High Street... that l can remember!! I also wear a yellow tabard with a plain...'Deaf'.. on the back when riding my current motor scooter...l have a motor scooter with a open entry due to above accidents, when out on that l have GREAT trouble getting people to over take and have to resort to putting on my left winker to give them a hint! I have been wondering if a policeman would give me a bit of lee-way, as l ride on pavements in a slow manner most of the time if they are there...?

Re: Folding Bike recommendations?

I have had folding cycles since the early 2000's, mostly Dahon's. I purchased my current one in 2013 because that is when Dahon seemed to have copied Brompton, and fitted a brazed luggage bracket on the head tube! For some stupid reason l purchased a Brompton in late 2018, but did not really get on with it due to the small wheels not getting on with unseen potholes! Also riding lonely Worcestershire country lanes, and being deaf made me feel slightly ill at ease, due to many rogues seeing Brompton's as possible portable...'cash cows'... My Dahon is now fitted with Tannus Tyres, thus removing punctures spoiling days out. I have no problem carrying my cycle onto trains and the like and l consider it to be a great purchase!...😉

Re: A possibly comfortable saddle...for all...

The sole reason l sent in this message... (and the previous long lasting one) is every time l look into this forum l come on this section, as its the nearest thing to the ...dumped disabled section...that used to be on this forum! I then find the usual messages from women concerning saddle types...As the Hobson saddle is rather far out as saddles go, l thought that people/woman who were having problems with the usual type of saddle that is favioured on this forum, would know there are other types of saddle's available, if only the complainer was prepared to search them out!? My wife has brought one of those strange wrist watches that count your steps, etc. Part of her new regime is sitting on my stationary cycle watching Youtube, for a time unknown to me! Its the usual primative gel/lump of plastic base...she winces everytime she gets off the cycle, l am NOT having you on there!!...Look on this message as a possible public help message of ...hope?? Also note when l joined this forum, and my merge message count, as l only come on here when l have something worthy to say.....

Re: A possibly comfortable saddle...for all...

.....I would like to thank.... JDSK....above for showing the sort of saddle l have in mind. You ladies out there can not see the adjusting thumb wheel that sits between the two saddles, this adjusts the two saddles to match your personal sit bone area! Ironicaly just last night my wife was using our exersise cycle while watching ...Youtube....on Netflix... and hobbled off the PLASTIC HARD PAN so called ..Jel Saddle...after finishing! This is what people get after the normal type of saddle with a one piece of material gives you. I feel its up to you what you do, but l am glad l had the gumption to get out of the Brooks type mindset that is too often shown on this type of forum by men who are stuck in a rut....

Maybe he should read my message properly and note l am good as well disabled ...(and on Disability Living Allowance)..and in pain thanks what happened in 1975....The Hobson saddles are the only thing that lets me continuing cycling, then again maybe he is having a sly joke...??!...

A possibly comfortable saddle...for all...

I was not going to message on here again as l did some year's ago ....about the popping up of the saddle problems message's all the time! However on the rare times l come onto this forum l look in at this section, and there they are again...A bit of history, l am a life long motorcyclist as well as a cyclist. Being a motorcyclist means you usually get dope's running into you, like l have been. I have whole body problems as a result. Five years or so after my last bad accident l found my usually comfortable Brooks B17 to be too painfull to ride as my right sit-bone..(my right leg had the contact with the Austin Maxi that ran into me) was making a nice ride...a pain! This started a search for a comfortable saddle. Most so called 'gel saddles' sit on a bone hard plastic base!! So after while you get to feel the base. I am currently....(2021)...awaiting a second Hernia repair...l have to wear a hernia double truss...with strapping going under my groin...(winces!)...l will tell you out there, straight up...buy a Hobson split saddle...American made! They have a adjustable gap in the middle so your tender bits are resting on air. Now l suppose all the nay sayers will turn up!...My finding are based on my decade old injuries, the above saddle make's riding fun, or you can stick with that bone hard Brooks that hurts your tender parts....Have fun learning the hard way.
