Re: is it usual...to pay prior to testing bicycle
having had more than one bike stolen by someone wanting a test ride we now insist on a card swipe for the full value of the bike(as per our insurance policy) or we send a member of staff along on the test ride.

Re: Buying a Brompton - any bargain opportunities ?
Brompton will be pushing 2016 bikes into stores now.Its not been a brilliant year for bike sales so far so if you decide which Brompton you want and ring round a few dealers you may find they have a 2015 or earlier Brompton they want to get rid of cheap.

Re: Calais dock area
I've been over to Calais by van a few times this summer and not had a problem. To address the issue of the migrants the approach to the ferry port is now pretty much fenced off with a large police presence at least at the times I have been.(My last trip was on Monday of this week)I think the issue wi...

I'm not surprised. Mild cheddar is really cheap in bulk and you can make quite a few derailleur hangers out of a kilo.
Just what cheese are you on???

Re: What's the mark up on new bikes?
Well the answer is it all depends where in the supply chain you look. In simple terms a bike manufacturer will have profit margins as will a distributor (where one is involved)as will the retailer.(Retail margins will vary considerably bewtween for example on line and bricks and mortar, lbs and chain...

Re: Is My Local Bike Shop Ripping Me Off?
The likes of Wiggle are buying in bulk from Shimano or a bike manufacturer who has surplus stock to move on.You may find that the part altho genuine comes in a plastic bag an indication that it has come from a bike manufacturer who is shifting surplus stock. An LBS will not get access to these deals ...

have seen examples of these built in glass fibre. The gpeople involved thought they had got a bargain buy but if it so cheap you have to ask yourself the question why.

Re: Have I been ripped off?
I haven't read thru all the replies so please bear with me if I am repeating points made earlier in this string. The store should have told you what work they expected to undertake on the bike and the likely cost and sought your agreement to this before starting work on the bike. If they then starte...

Re: How fussy about scratches and dinks in shop?
An area where it is difficult to avoid some marking is dropouts. As soon as an axle is tightened you will inevitably mark the drop out and may lose some paint. There is no getting away from this with painted drop outs.I would therefore not pursue this issue with a shop assuming the damage is not exces...

Re: trek madone stolen or not
If the frame is relatively new it should be traceable through the bar code on the frame. This assumes the original dealer recorded this number along with the purchasers details at the time of the sale Of course if it has been sold on by the original owner things could get a little more difficult.

Re: How do I obtain a secondhand brompton?
any local Brompton dealer should have a demo bike which they will dispose of at a discounted price.
Ask them and they may put your name against the bike
