Except that the "locking QR" is just a 5-sided allen-key which you can buy in any bike-shop?

Re: Replacement for Avid BB5 brakes?

Update: one bike shop has written to say "All disc brakes will be compatible, as all mounts are a standard spacing and size" - if that's the case then it's a lot easier :)

Replacement for Avid BB5 brakes?

Are there any other makes of disc-brake which will fit as a direct replacement for Avid BB5? (same mounting holes, keeping the same disc attached to wheel, etc.)?

Re: Discontinuous Bus Lanes

The dimensions of such gaps are critical - if they can't be made wide enough (ie > 4.5m) to overtake a cyclist safely they should be narrowed (to < 3m) so it is obvious even to the most stupid drivers that there is not enough room. And say that again, but with a straight face? ;) I've been overtake...

Re: What's the purpose of advisory cycle lanes?

The Institute of Advanced Motorists book advises that we ignore them and ride in the same position that we would do if the lanes were not there. Doesn't that lead to accusations that you're "changing lanes" every time the safe cycling line veers in and out of the green tarmac? (along with...

What's the purpose of advisory cycle lanes?

Seriously, I was just wondering. Take your average "advisory" cycle lane: The highway code treats it as a line of parking spaces, by not prohibiting parked cars The police/council treat it as a line of parking spaces, by not removing or ticketing people parked there (even when it's double-...

Re: Cycle Lanes and crossing traffic.

In a town near me they've painted little give-way lines across everyones' driveway where the cycle lane goes past :) http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&ie=UTF8&ll=52.139668,-0.489691&spn=0,0.004624&t=h&z=18&layer=c&cbll=52.139747,-0.489811&panoid=HfVC2hGv92Ip6PNov3__...

Re: GPS Cycle Shop "Point of Interest" File?

On OpenStreetmap, download nodes with the tag shop=bicycle - there's a XAPI link for that at the bottom of http://osmdoc.com/en/tag/shop/bicycle Other node types you might be interested in are amenity=bicycle_rental and amenity=bicycle_repair To see those bike shops on the main openstreetmap website...

Good cheap trailers?

What's the verdict on luggage trailers for occasional use? Are the argos ones ok? Is there anything else <£100 which is good?

How well do they store when left outdoors in the rain?

How about a "Smile, you're on YouTube" sticker or t-shirt, to give motorists pause for thought before overtaking closely whilst speeding and on the phone? They could appear on edinburghfixed's channel :)

Re: Is anyone using a Garmin Etrex as their only computer ?

Garmin Geko seemed to work quite well for getting speed and distance (disclaimer: I also make maps as a hobby, so it was useful for that too). I know other cyclists using the geko as a computer. You have to stand still for a minute or so before getting the signal. It won't work in woods (newer ones ...

Re: Best/brightest rear lights?

I've got Smart 0.5W and Cateye LD1100 here to compare now. The cateye concentrates nearly all its light into a 14 degree beam, so it's marginally brighter if you're looking directly along its axis (e.g. from far away) or from the side (35 degree side beam). However, the Smart seems to be more visibl...
