Re: Fulcrum Racing Sport Freehub

Using Fulcrum Racing 900 wheels (Planet X have them on sale at £75) for the rest of winter as the freehub is easier to get at for inspection/clean and regrease. They are a better design for servicing than the Racing Sport's. Update: Bought a second pair for £59.99 with an extra 20% discount code.

Re: Fulcrum Racing Sport Freehub

Disassembled the old freehub, quite a lot of rust. The grease seemed a bit thick where the two pawls were, spring seems ok. Cleaned it up and reassembled with fresh grease and it feels smooth, have ordered some new 1/8th inch bearings to put in it.

Re: Fulcrum Racing Sport Freehub

Reviving this old thread as my current wheels on my road bike are Racing Sports used since 2019. The freehub pawls started sticking slightly so bought a new one from Inspiral Cycles, it's slightly different than the original and requires one less spacer and seems better sealed. Will attempt to disassemble the old one to see if it can be repaired. Needed to knock out the non-driveside bearing and use a 12mm hex key to remove the old freehub. Full instructions were on the Fulcrum website which was helpful. I've been impressed with this £90 wheelset as they've handled a lot of rough roads and stayed true. Hopefully the new freehub will last well.

Re: Adjusting DMR V8 pedals

The nut came loose on one of my my V8 2.1's. Bought the socket tool and replaced the smaller nut with a nylock one from a pack I bought at Lidl which is a much tighter fit on the threads. The pedals have a nice feel in use so felt they were worth fixing, though the old version with the greaseport was a great design.

These were the instructions for the tool:

The DMR V8 v2.1 Service tool is designed to adjust the 11mm base nut on the Dual Bushing bearing system found on the current V8 pedal with grey plastic end caps.

Use this thin wall Chrome-moly Steel socket with a 13mm spanner to back off the 11mm base nut against the 9mm lock nut on the end of the axle to adjust the pre-load on the bearings.

Tools required to service or adjust your V8 Dual Bushing pedal :

- 15mm spanner or 6mm allen wrench - to remove pedal from crank arm
- Pick - to pop off end cap
- 9mm Socket - to adjust lock nut
- 13mm spanner - to adjust V8 service tool
- DMR V8 Service tool - to adjust 11mm base nut on axle against lock nut
- Small flat blade screwdriver - to hold/jam 9mm lock nut when adjusting base nut

Re: School trying to make helmets compulsory

Shoddy journalism from the BBC does not help, full of clichés:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-england-hampshire-42345928/girl-says-cycle-helmets-should-be-compulsory

"'A helmet saved my life'

A year after her life was saved by a cycle helmet, a 12-year-old girl from Hampshire is calling for them to be made compulsory. Maisie was run over by a car on her way to school in November 2016.

Her pelvis was shattered in five places, and doctors say that her cycle helmet saved her life. She is now working with road safety officials to promote safe cycling in schools.

Looks good so far, have had trouble with Firefox using to much CPU and freezing up on my old Win7 PC (mainly when running YouTube and Facebook concurrently) and this update seems to have fixed it.

Re: Cycling as a whole; losing the plot...?

From https://gravelandgrind.com/open-source-shifting/

"Shimano, round about 2003, decided to abandon normal bike riders. They snuffed the flame on tourists, casual riders, mountain bikers who have to ride to the trail head, mountain touring, or any one who needed gearing that fell outside of conventional racer or amateur racer needs. Shimano slowly duped the world into accepting the new norm of incompatibility, forced obsolescence, and unnecessary ‘advancements’ like electronic shifting. Here’s a basic run down on what Shimano did, and why you should be madder than a bunch of hornets that built a nest over a BBQ smoker."

"Shimano is secretly killing the triple crank. This is a huge can of worms, and I won’t fully open it, but here’s a peek inside. Shimano wants everyone to look like a racer. Magazines want whatever Shimano wants. Triples are tourist items, or normal person items, or older rider items, and Shimano only wants racers. Only the cheapest Shimano groups currently come with a triple option. A replacement triple front derailleur for your nice Ultegra group is only available in the Tiagra level, two steps down in quality. In a year, it will only be Sora, I bet. This means if you want to run integrated shifting plus a triple, you can currently do it, with old model 105 10 speed stuff, but the new stuff will phase that out soon, and you’ll be living in a world with no decent quality Shimano Triples. I’ll bet they do away with the double in 5 years, for everything but cheapo bikes, and go to a 1×13 or some nonsense. They’re already working on 12 speed stuff, and 105 electronic shifting."

From: https://gravelandgrind.com/great-ways-ruin/

Aerodynamic and even many new non aero road race frames often have terrible tire clearances. Our friend Rick mounted a set of 25mm Conti 4 seasons on his Cervelo and they rubbed a hole in his seat tube. Those tires run narrow, so they were more like a fat 23mm. That means the bike can never run tires below 100 psi, and can never be used on anything but the smoothest roads. That’s more typical for race bikes than atypical and it’s a shame.

3T Strada: I would not promote riding it off-road with those clearances as they do in this vid: https://youtu.be/HgI_0sKoFf0?t=1m15s

LollyKat wrote:What's to stop a thief registering a stolen bike as theirs?

When you download a certificate it has the date on it. If the bike is fitted with RFID the thief will not know the tag number. A criminal would have to be pretty stupid to put their personal details on a site the police have access to. They will not know if the item they have stolen is already registered, reported stolen or fitted with hidden RFID.

If an item registered on Immobilise is lost or stolen you report it as such from the dashboard.

From https://www.immobilise.com/about

"Immobilise can be used by members of the public and businesses to register their valued possessions or company assets, and exclusive to Immobilise all account holders registered items and ownership details are viewable on the Police national property database the NMPR.

This online checking service is used thousands of times each day by UK Police forces to trace owners of lost and stolen property."

Re: Bicycle without Receipt

I registered all my bikes on https://www.immobilise.com You can add identifiers (frame numbers, immobiTag RFID number etc.), list the parts and add photos. You can also download and print item certificates.

Re: Far too good to be true

One of the e-bikes pictured on that dodgy website was at Eurobike, has a rrp of £5,499, not the £399 they claim.

Scamadviser.com says Eurpop.com (owner Gueijuan Xu) is suspicious, the domain age is 38 days and as such doesn't have an online reputation yet.

http://www.ruff-cycles.com on the other hand has a high trust rating, a domain age of 5 years, and is deemed to be popular by Alexa with a ranking of 650,420.

Re: Fulcrum Racing Sport Freehub

Discovered the Shimano LX freehub on my Thorn Audax bike had seized when I checked it a few months after last using it in the winter. Removed the seals and flushed it with some GT85, which got it moving but it still felt rough.

Using a Lidl's Parkside mini grinder tool I made a freehub disassembly tool out of a 13/16" socket (£2.35 off Ebay) following RJ the Bike Guy's YouTube guide. Filed some flats on the socket so I could secure the tool using the quick-release skewer and unscrew the race with a 24mm spanner.

Opened up the freehub and found the races were good but the outer set of freehub bearings were black and imperfect. Replaced them with some new 1/8" ball bearings and White Lightning Crystal Clear Grease and the freehub now runs smooth with no play.

Also checked the Claris freehub on my Bianchi which was fine but should now stay that way longer with the fresh grease. I have loads of time, but not loads of money so will mend and make do when I can.

Re: Shimano and Campag Triples

Got a Sora GS rear mech on my Bianchi road bike with 53/39/26 chainset, and Sora SS rear mech (around 7.5cm between pulley centres) on wife's road bike with 50/39/26 chainset.

They have 11-32 9 speed cassettes, both shift fine (as well as the SGS rear mechs I've used on the Bianchi), and can shift into big/big.
