Re: Tips for Windy days?

Thanks for all the replies. It looks like the answer is to get off if in doubt, I knew that really. I was wearing quite snug clothing, my thermals are fitted. Jacket and leggings now both need gaffer tape patches :( Quite glad not to have gone through the expensive Haglofs thermal top as well. Defin...

Tips for Windy days?

Last night was quite windy in Aberdeen. On my way home I was blown over. It was here , just south of the Bridge of Don, where the wind comes straight off the North Sea over the Links and always gusts between the blocks of flats, so I was expecting it (sort of). I had moved out further from the kerb ...

Re: Could happen to any of us - does it?

Mine, June 2010, is almost identical to eileithyia's second. Car turned right across me after appearing to slow. Differences being the road is north-south (but no sun issues in summer) and that I t-boned the car, headbutted the window, bounced off and landed elbow points first on my backside. Elbows...

Re: Aberdeen Cyclist Killed

The man killed was a contractor in my husband's office, though he was at another company on the same site last week. The information my husband heard (which obviously may not be correct) is that he was going straight on at the roundabout (up the hill heading north) and a HGV also going straight on s...

Re: waterproof tights

I have New Balance tights with a waterproof panel on the front of the thighs - the bit that gets wettest. They are good on cold wet windy days, when wind chill would be a problem.

As Si said though, they do get rather sweaty under the waterproof bit.

Re: Road layout technical description?

The Dutch word is woonerf, though I think it usually means a space were pedestrians and bikes are given priority; shared space may be a more appropriate/accurate description, depending on the circumstances.

Re: Light weight waterproof

Rab Volt. Uses Pertex Shield fabric. Very lightweight, like the Montane, but more breathable. About £130 I think.

On my commute, I give you this beauty. Also not a roundabout, and a favourite of the driving test centre routes.

Re: Travel Insurance

BMC cover is technically good. But their underwriter has outsourced the claims handling. My experience was not good. I feel it reflected rather badly on the BMC.

Re: Mountain Equipment Firelite Pants

Mountain Equipment would probably advise that you don't. At least not regularly. When the rep came in to give us our product training he made quite a big deal of being careful who Active Shell is sold to. Their Active Shell clothing is aimed at 'fast and light' use, i.e. hill runners. They have not ...

Re: I'm sick to death of many BIG HEAD car drivers !

I'd say the teenagers round here are more likely to shout something incomprehensible and drive off than actually endanger me. The worst are orange women and men who are just that bit old, bald and fat. A self esteem issue? Them and the bus drivers. And the construction trades. Oh, wait, that'd also ...

Re: Out with the Cubs

ferrit worrier, it's a shame that your County have lost out by not supporting you through the permit system. That's the role my husband has for our Region - it's a lot of work keeping track of everyone's permit expiry dates, NGB qualifications and the policy changes Gilwell like to throw out there, ...

Re: Out with the Cubs

'Adventurous Activities' are easy. You get a Leader with a Scout Association Permit for said activity. The permitted activity is carried out in the permitted conditions.

Walking alongside a road requires no permit, but exposes you to the unpredictable nature of the general public.

Re: How effective is reproofing a waterproof jacket?

Does the water bead up on the outside of the jacket? If no, clean and reproof. If yes, check for holes. Waterproof fabrics with any degree of breathability rely on the outside face fabric shedding the rain water. When the face fabric is saturated the moisture vapour from you cannot pass through it a...

Re: commuting 8 miles to work advice required

I'd go for a hybrid type for all the reasons suggested above. You can probably (almost) make your mtb into a hybrid by switching tyres, locking off the suspension and adjusting the positions of the saddle/handlebars. I've done this when I've had to use my mtb on occasions when my commuting bike has ...
