Re: Rusty brake disk rivets

What make/model discs are they?
I've got centre-lock Shimano Tourney and the rivets are shiny, but they're the summer wheels and don't go out in salty conditions. The winter wheels are 6-bolt discs and don't have rivets
Are the rivets rusty on the outside of the wheel?

Re: Rusty brake disk rivets

Nothing too unusual I wouldn't have thought, assuming the rivets are stainless. The discs are clean
Some stainless steels are more prone than others and some chemical attacks make stainless steel more prone

I repaired a loo brush with an A2 grade stainless screw, but it's achieved mild steel levels of rusting. I'm hoping that it's toilet cleaner rather than anything else that's causing the rust or the quack and I might need a chat :)

Read the article that I linked to.
The BoE has been independent of HMG since 1997 and both have to pull in the same direction
People can twist long-established facts to suit their narrative, e.g. BoE independence was established under Tony Blair's government, but Liz Truss's actions were taken knowing that was a fact and had been for 1/4 century, so she can't blame Tony Blair for that (there are lots of things that I do blame TB for, but that isn't one)

al_yrpal wrote: 13 Apr 2024, 11:04am If you get a chance read Liz Truss's article in the Saturday Mail. According to her her reforms were sunk by the triumvirate of the BOE, the OBR and the Treasury pulling the economic rug out. She wanted to scrap the OBR (its forecasts are mostly wrong), the Treasury is anti Manufacturing, pro EU Remain, pro immigration, and the BOE staffed by dullards. In truth we are doing reasonably well compared to similar nations but we are constantly under verbal attack by sulking remainers (much in evidence hereabouts).

Liz Truss was plain wrong in wanting to reduce tax rates for the very rich.

Ronnie Reagan tried supply-side and trickle-down economics in 1979 and increased national debt by 186%. The US economy grew, but at a slower rate than many Presidents achieved either before or since

Her decision, with Kwazi Kwarteng, was wrong. It was said by many economists at the time and was nothing to do with "deep state", a triumvirate or anything else. The only good that came out of Liz Truss's economics was an increase in pensions

I'd suggest that you see a GP, it could also be low blood pressure. Mine drops off a cliff compared to "normal" before a ride; 20-30 off both readings

Re: Disc brake caliper - advice/warning!

I've chewed the slotted heads so my next step is to try drilling it out. For those who have attempted this before what size of LH drill bit did you use and did you drill a pilot hole first?
Try for access rather than drilling. The thread is only at the head end of the screw so take the wheel out and cut the screw between the two pads so that you can a) slide the pads, spring and the circlip end of the screw out and b) leave a stub to grip that's more accessible than the screwhead

See if you can grip the screw inside the caliper and unscrew it from there. If that fails use a succession of smaller to bigger RH pilot drills and try to unscrew the stub at intervals because the heat might very well do the job as you go. For RH and LH drill size be guided by the hole in the brake pad

I use the screw type pad axle with a careful smear of copper grease on the thread and they've been fine for several years

Re: Kenda Moped tyres on Cannondale Hybrids?

I've no idea what the 100 means
For a car tyre it's the aspect ratio, i.e. 100% or 60mm wide and 60mm high

Car tyres without a marked aspect ratio are around 80%, everything else is marked, e.g. 200/50 would be 200mm wide and 100mm high

If you haven't already then you need to get reading on the traffic management requirements

That's the nature of GPS unfortunately. It's bound to be less accurate for a variety of reasons including the accuracy of the satellite signal being bounced around on its journey from orbit, loss of signal due to buildings and woodland, etc.

Re: GPX devices...Garmin alternative

Regarding plugging it in - all units will need a connection to "home base" at some point, that's how they get map updates. It's done through Garmin Express (a separate, but related, portal to Garmin Connect).
That isn't wholly true, my Etrex30 uses free mapping and I copy it direct to the MicroSD card as explained here... https://www.openfietsmap.nl/tips-tricks/installation

You don't have to install the map for a whole region, you can install only those map "tiles" that you need

I come from a generation who used to blow out our brake drums at the roadside when we serviced our motor bikes and cars
Me too. There is research to suggest that a combination of low overall exposure and changes to the fibres caused by braking reduces risk in the occasional DIY-er https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10 ... 19.1568385

Jonathan will doubtless burst my bubble on the veracity of the study methodology

It's definitely not an experiment to try at home, follow HSE advice :)

Re: GPX devices...Garmin alternative

Add in a memory card, and the issue is doubled
For my Etrex I put the memory card directly into the PC, it has one folder, GPX (which you must have for my Etrex), and I drop my mapped routes in there.
You get more or less instant folder access and don't have to wait for the device to communicate with the PC

The end of the day is more painful because the ridden route only appears on the device and does take a bit longer, but overall I didn't feel that it's worth changing devices. YMMV, but give that a go

If you're after bluetooth, etc, then I'm sure that you'll get some options from users

P&O also currently expects some crew to work seven days a week, for up to 17 weeks at a time, without a break.
Herve Berville describe this practice as “dangerous” and “not moral”
https://www.itv.com/news/2024-03-20/fra ... -not-moral
Perhaps M. Berville and his predecessors could have considered enforcing existing legislation for the last 18 years?

Maritime Labour Convention, 2006, as amended
Regulation 2.3 – Hours of work and hours of rest
Purpose: To ensure that seafarers have regulated hours of work or hours of rest

3. Each Member acknowledges that the normal working hours’ standard for seafarers, like that for other workers, shall be based on an eight-hour day with one day of rest per week and rest on public holidays. However, this shall not prevent the Member from having procedures to authorize or register a collective agreement which determines seafarers’ normal working hours on a basis no less favourable than this standard.

Re: ...a safe way to turn a bike over

Usually tapping the brake lines gets the bubbles out of them. Tilt the bike fore and aft to help. I have a step through eBike and some maintenance needs it to be inverted.
Are you going to guarantee "usually"?

If you or I choose to invert our bikes and have a braking disaster then it's our problem, a local group of volunteers working on someone else's bike on the other hand...
