Re: South Downs Way
I would rather see a mass readathon where CTC members read backcopies of the CTC magazine-that would be mentally challenging reading about the merits of a dished rear wheel,dia-compe brakes and leather saddles and chafing.

Re: Road Tax for Electric Bikes ?
It is a bit sad to cry troll instead of making a decent argument.E-bikes are simply a dilute version of an electric motorbike-or a smaller version of an electric car, both being dependent on burning gas and lignite. They are assisted in theory but many are ridden by somewaht overweight riders, possibly unable to finance the expense of a decent motorbike/scooter.In the nearfuture theymay be banned unless their persistence is justified by tax revenues.

Re: South Downs Way
This seems like an effective way to alienate anyone seeking some p and q in the Downs.100 miles offroad is a tougbh challenge, and for many, possibly dangerous given the hot weather. The organiser should be given a meddle.

Surely there is a mistake.
The post title ?
Should it read ..
Road Tax for Motorbikes.
The fundementa lmistake lies with cyclists who think an electirc bike is different from a motorbike or scooter. They are powered vehiicles dependent upon fossil fuels for their source of power.I shall be urging my MP to raise the uissue in the Commons. At present they are an anomoly and need to be addressed urgently,as they are apotential menace. At present their cost is such that they lie beyond the teenage market, but as technology advances their costs will plummet and soon teenagers will afford them-at which point there will be opressure to eithr ban them or subject them to tax.I would supoert banning them form bridal paths and toe paths, and exclkude riders under 17 and over 70 unless the elderly can pass a simple proficiency test.

Re: The Laws of Football
I think the referee was wrong-it is unlikely anyone wearing such sheer shorts would risk breaking wind-to do so would invite posible embarrassment and public humiliation.I have known many cyclists who have transgressed and ridden home in great discomfoort-often toi the rear of the groiup.

Taxes have never controlled behaviour, and people have no option but to pay the tax.

Well as I can see they are an expensive gimmick,I have eschewed them for a conventional alternaive, which is both economical and effective.I do not need to drink urine or eat faeces to qualify any opinion I form about their epicuyrean qualities. It is clear you have been sediced sucked in,ripped off and now have to prosletyse to alleviate your sense of disappointment.

If you cannot stop using a conventional caliper set-up ypu need to sharpen your anticipation, the sole exception being loaded when a cantilever is very adequate.Disc brakes are a gimmick-rather like the nbew shapes of mountain-bikes.

I imagine that the streets outside the zone will be more busy and more dangerous-the very streets where perhaps many children live?Secondly the Austrians are quyite accepting of a central authority whereas inn the UK we will not accept small restrctions on the unmentionable frree market economy

Re: Why have disc brakes become so popular?
It is very hard to improve a bike and make new fangled bikes that are better.Manufacturers are developing newer devices(discbrakes) which may be no better overall. In the 1980s and 90s many people bought music they had aleady paid for renouncing vinyl for CD format records.Ironically the conosewer now plays his vinal on a £2000 record player, even though the sound quaklity is poor.

I would spend less by purchasing the cheaper option and focus on getting really fit.Shift your question ie are you good enough for the bike>

If I knew Paul O Grady, the thinking womans Cilla Black was threatening to inflict herself on the lucky Italians I would have voted Tory.Having said that the Tories came fourth where we live, and still beat Liberals. My altered vote would have had little effect on the overall figures.

Re: pedestrianising Oxford St rejected bt Westminster Council

It seems strange to draw an opposition between "businesses in pedestrianised zones" and "the independent retail sector," when often it's independent shops that are found on pedestrianised streets. Perhaps an assumption is being made that pedestrianised zone = mall?2
The issue is about Oxford Street, which I imagine has few independents. There was no assumption as the case in point has been specified.Malls I think are enclosed, and often are built with the intentioin of excluding .You rarely see cars driven round Meadowhall or Trafford Centre these days.
