Re: Dawes Galaxy Classic 531 2016

is 531 so special? Only for reasons of nostalgia. Metallurgy has moved on a long way since 1935. All steels have approximately the same stiffness (~200GPa) and density (~7.8g/cm³), but they vary considerably in strength. 853 is about 50% stronger than 531. If your framebuilder doesn't understand ho...

Re: Why so few "sidelights" for bikes?

Sidelights don't really work, because being seen is only half the battle. It is extremely difficult to assess the distance, speed and direction of a single point of light. A sidelight communicates almost no useful information to another motorist - it's just one of many points of light in their field...

Re: Changing drops to bullhorn or straight

Just fit wider drop bars and raise them a bit with a shorter, steeper stem. There's no magic about the shape of a handlebar, it's just a matter of getting the right geometry to provide you with a more upright riding position and a longer steering moment. The On-One Midge handlebars are ideal for thi...

The value of the pound has collapsed.

In 2006, £1 bought you 15 Chinese Yuan or 220 Japanese Yen. Today, you'll get 9 Yuan or 150 Yen for your pound.

Re: Are you to heavy for this.

Let's be very clear about something. Rims for racing bikes, such as the Mavic Open Pro and Velocity Aerohead, are made for people who use bicycles in races. If this was right, why would Mavic make Open Pros in 36h? Racing cyclists used to use exactly that sort of wheel, and often still do for the s...

Re: Ladies

Saddles are highly personal, so it's difficult to make any sort of general recommendation. If your wife is happy with the Specialized Riva on her solo bike, you might want to try something else from the Specialized range on the tandem. If her position on the tandem is more upright, consider a wider ...

Re: Omni Racer cassettes

Mick F might be keen to know this; "Company Z Ltd" are one of the UK distributors for Miche and will sell you a custom cassette in whatever configuration you like - £40 for 9sp, £50 for 10sp, Campag or Shimano. They're currently short of stock in Campag 10sp, but are awaiting a delivery. Y...

Re: Are you to heavy for this.

How can manufacturers state that 95k is a limit yet produce bikes that are XL and XXL and on 23c tyres. They also state sizes like 6' 3" and 6'5". They surely can,t expect riders to be 95kg at these heights. They would never sell a bike in the states. There are also plenty of people who l...

Re: Omni Racer cassettes

Come to think of it, you could buy a Miche 12-29, a Miche 11-23, mix and match sprockets to your heart's content and still have spent less than half what you would have on that CNC confection. I'm sure someone on the forums would give you a few quid for the cassette left over.

Re: Omni Racer cassettes

That aside, their up to 29 cassettes are daft (11-12-13-15-17-19-21-24-27-29 or 12-13-14-15-17-19-21-24-27-29) only a 2 tooth space between 1st & 2nd but 3 teeth gaps for the next 2 changes. That 11-29 set is pretty much what i've worked out i want to fit, yeah maybe 26 would be better than 27 ...

Re: Are you to heavy for this.

By the way this is my "Lardy" 96Kg eldest boy at his last competition. If you're a lean 15 stone, then a modern racing bike is even less suitable than if you're a podgy old git. Track sprinters often break even massively overbuilt kit because of the immense amount of torque they can gener...

Re: Decathlon Triban 3... mudguard clearance?

I'm sorry but this is getting really frightening. I have personally had a front wheel jam up twice, and its not a happy occurrence. The situation is intolerable, I agree - there just aren't any trad bikes on the market at a reasonable price, so inevitably a lot of people are going to use inappropri...

Re: how many liter bag for 10 days trip?

Are you camping, staying in hotels? Do you want to dress smartly in the evenings? Wear fresh underwear everyday ? etc etc. That. It's something you have to work out for yourself. Some people tour indefinitely with just a big saddlebag, others carry 80l of kit for a weekend away. Figure out what you...
