Actually much easier to hang by the back wheel. (Idea cribbed from Scotrail bike storage on trains)
Pick up the bike by the frame, both hands share the load, hook the back wheel. Better than having the front wheel waving about trying to hook the wheel without scratching the car, or wiping your trousers over the filthy car.

Re: touring wheels upgrade

It’s also important to hold on to some idea of the magnitude of the effect of extra weight at the rim.
An extra half kilo at the rim of both of your wheels might make 1% difference but only when accelerating; at least that’s what we said on the previous page.
…accelerating bike and rider, not just spinning the wheels in air.

Re: Front wheel 9mm across flats into 10mm drop outs

It’s the function of the torque washers to stop the axle turning in the dropouts. As you have been using it with the torque washers a sloppy fit on the filed down axle, I don’t think there’s much to be lost by carrying on doing that.
On a Rohloff where the torque reaction at the axle can be in either direction, depending on which gear is engaged, the reaction arm is particularly well secured to the axle assembly by 6 screws, it doesn’t rely on flats on the axle.

Re: Custom Storage

Keep the car on the drive.
Simples!

(Don’t you get more rust keeping it in the garage, because it stays wet underneath?)

Re: Broken Chain! I’m a complete amateur

These days I don’t join any chain with a chain tool, even 8 speed…..always a magic link.
My chain tool usually has several “necklaces” round the pin, these are the “peened over” rivet ends which come off when you push the rivet out.

Front or rear shifter, how many speeds, which exact model number and what isn’t it doing?

Isn’t there a local bike recycling charity or somebody you ride with that you could give it to?

Re: Broken Chain! I’m a complete amateur

Unless I made it up, wasn’t there an episode years back when a particular type or make of chain used to get cracks in the sideplates radiating out from the rivet?
Wrong sort of steel or hardening process?

Stress corrosion cracking.
I am indebted to Brucey for that information, as well as so much else.
Also get SCC in alloy, eg hub flanges, as I understand

Thank you for the confirmation; I won't be drilling holes in my rims any time soon.

Re: touring wheels upgrade

Numbers? I'm just a simple biologist with rapidly declining facilities, trying to make sense of the world.

Simple numbers for a simple man....

Say bike + rider + bag = 100 Kg

Say excess wheel & tyre weight at the rim = 1/2 Kg per wheel

Is it then the case that as accelerating the wheel rim "counts double" the excess for 2 wheels is equivalent to accelerating an extra 1 Kg?

....in other words an extra 1/2 Kilo per wheel is 1% when but only when accelerating.

Re: touring wheels upgrade

I can accelerate the wheel by brushing it with my hand.
I need to use both legs to accelerate rider plus bike.
While I am accelerating rider plus bike, the difference between a regular tyre ( accelerate the wheel with a brush of your hand) and a light tyre ( accelerate the wheel with a light brush of your hand) is insignificant.

Unless you would like to produce real numbers demonstrating that accelerating a bicycle wheel takes a significant proportion of what it takes to accelerate rider plus bike plus any luggage.

It takes twice the effort to accelerate weight at the rim.
You can feel the difference between a heavy wheel and a light wheel when you are spinning the wheel on its own with your fingers.
However when you are riding the bike, in order to accelerate the wheel you have to accelerate the rider, bike, and luggage, so tiny differences in wheel or tyre are insignificant.

Oh, OK… I just followed the SJSC link…..that’s different to what I’m looking at, which is an old Alivio or something like the ones Col. was looking at.

Different link in your first post, I think

Good luck with it, better not sneeze when you have something that small in front of you!

Re: touring wheels upgrade

It’s the same fallacy….its easy to feel the difference in 1kg tyre weight when you are accelerating just the wheel by spinning it with your fingers, but as soon as you have to accelerate rider, luggage and bike, just in order to accelerate the wheel then the difference of 1kg won’t be noticed, wether it’s on your tyre or your head.
