Re: Headset cartridge Bearing-Shimano BC1-help please

I take it that is one of the old threaded headsets in 1" variety? yes If you can't find the same headset or suitable replacement bearings there are plenty of decent quality ISO 1" threaded headsets around. You will have to watch out for stack height though as of 105s are quite short. If i...

Re: Headset cartridge Bearing-Shimano BC1-help please

I might be getting confused here in that I'm following various parts and part numbers and am wondering if I've arrived an equivalent part or not. > In a post above my 'BC1' is PN 78V-9803 > in this post here (6th post down) Brucey links in a document plus other info which leads to 78V-9803 being the...

Re: Headset cartridge Bearing-Shimano BC1-help please

I believe you need Shimano part number 78V 9803. These are very hard to find because Shimano stopped making them. Cyclebasket had them until recently (just one in stock a couple of months ago) but they’re now sold out. I see it here for £25 , but I have never heard of that shop so can’t vouch it. T...

Re: Galaxy Steel Frame repair advice please

Well, I've learnt a lot about seat stays and their fixing methods from these posts - thank you one and all for sharing your knowledge. As has been said, the particular way Dawes chose to 'attach' the seat stays does leave a lot to be desired in terms of the rather small attachment area - but hey ho,...

Headset cartridge Bearing-Shimano BC1-help please

The lower cartridge bearing in my 1989 Dawes Galaxy has suffered water ingress and requires replacing but I am unable to find anything on the web when I search for "Shimano Cartridge Bearing BC1" or similar phrases. There may be alternatives of course, but I do not know how such bearings a...

Re: Galaxy Steel Frame repair advice please

Thanks once again for all the inputs. Brucey - you mention that you've seen this type of failure in Dawes Galaxy before - out of interest, is this in frames built in the UK or after construction went overseas (or both)? My frame is now 30yrs old (of which I have had it 10yrs and no idea on previous ...

Re: Galaxy Steel Frame repair advice please

1. Thank you all for your views and I now have a better understanding of the possible routes forward. 2. I am I think, the 3rd owner of the bike, so no possibility of a lifetime warranty claim. 3. The two frame repairers linked to are many miles from me down here in the Portsmouth area, but they ser...

Galaxy Steel Frame repair advice please

My trusty Dawes Galaxy (circa 1989) has suffered a seat stay fracture just below where the stay is brazed onto the down tube/top tube lug. Is this sort of problem fixable and if so, what is the technique to be used i.e. brazing.welding (and what type of welding)? And is this work within the scope of...

Re: Mapometer - what else is there?

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions - plotaroute looks particularly interest and I've created an account.

I'll also take a look a cycle.travel and bikehike too (but a guy can only take so much of this tech stuff in, in one go!).

Mapometer - what else is there?

I've used Mapometer on and off for some years but of late I'm finding that creating tracks using the Draw Route feature and with Follow Roads selected, the routing is including footpaths, bridleways and other ways that are DEFINITELY NOT road riding territory.(I suspect it's been like this for some ...

Re: Schwalbe Marathon Vs Marathon Plus tyres.

Whether M or M+, it's pretty likely that a puncture will happen sometime. I've not used the M but did use the M+ which were horribly tight on my wheels and as such I genuinely feared getting a road-side puncture and NOT being either get the tyre off in the first instance or not being able to get it ...

Re: Replacing Panaracer Pasela Tourguard 26 x 1.25 (32-559)

Despite much googling over the past few days, I had not seen the Conti Contact Speed and for a moment I thought I'd have to buy Marathon (who do a 32-559 version but are somewhat wighty). So thanks very much @Brucey for the heads up and Mr Postie will be delivering a pair soon (Reflective version fr...

Replacing Panaracer Pasela Tourguard 26 x 1.25 (32-559)

Thieseare Gumwall/Skinwall tyres and my good lady's touring bike has had them for a while but they now need replacing. SJS seem the ONLY source at £35 each which seems a bit steep. Does anyone know of an alternative and cheaper source or indeed an alternative skinwll/gumwall tyre (must be 32-559) Ma...
