Hi,
I am planning to do the Canal Du Midi a bit later in the year, but am planning to hire a bike as it will be easier than taking ours on the plane.
Has anyone used any of the Cycle Hire Providers ?, if it comes to it, I can take a bike, but would prefer to hire if there is a decent place locally.
Rgds
Alex.

Re: Isolated case of some justice
Still a horrible mention of a Helmet and hi vis vest from the judge.
It's as if the law requires these items to make a person visible.
It's about time the CTC wrote to judges.

Somewhat divisive but it seems to work.

Re: fewer motorists fined for mobile use
Using a mobile, speeding and lack of seatbelt should be outsourced to a g4s or serco to enforce for a percentage of the fines ( 50 pct ? )
any speeding over a certain percentage can then be given to the police for full prosecutions.
If there was a commercial incentive to enforce then I am sure people would soon stop.

Re: How to find out about cycle path closures ?
We appear to have a problem in Chelmsford with the local authority allowing the 'stopping up' of lots of cycle paths on a 6 month rolling basis and then applying to the DFT for an extension.
The local highways panel is now a closed shop so it is almost impossible to lobby against it.

Get a balance bike, very difficult to fall off when you can just put your feet down.

Re: pannier laptop commuter
It is more the bike just falling over or something that is my concern, I need my laptop for work, the extra 500g of padding and waterproofing is well worth it for me.

Re: pannier laptop commuter
Do you really want to take the risk with your laptop ? - get a decent quality pannier with padding and waterproofing.
Anything else is penny wise and pound foolish.
I have a carradice bike Bureau - eye wateringly expensive, but now I would not be without it.

Re: Help with choosing bike type and/or commute through Lond
That is a long ride to do every day, unless you want to be doing a LOT of maintainence particularly over the winter you need a reliable bike.
Think marathon plus tyres, hub gears, full chain case, mud guards and dynamo lights.
Also it is likely you are going to be carrying a laptop and books - get this weight off your back and get a rack and pannier.
IMO it is too far to do every day, maybe cycle a couple of days a week.

Re: So much for a Road Safety organisation
More than unbelievable - utterly infuriating - Poorly designed - Victim blaming - Incorrect. - Even the backtracking does not go far enough.
Please do not forget the organisation concerned have taken public money to do this and appear not to have consulted anyone.
Charities such as the CTC and Sustrans would have done this for a lot less even possibly for free.
If I was a tax payer in the area I would be contacting my councillor or doing a freedom of information request for the cost.

Re: A-hole in a van.
"I'm sorry mrs x, I appreciate we were a long time responding to your 999 call. Unfortunately we encountered a litterer, an illegal number plate and a pavement cyclist without pedal reflectors on the way here"
I'd want police to prioritise more urgent cases over more minor ones
The poster point was that if the officer may not have had time to properly enforce the law with regards to a driver on a mobile phone because of a domestic incident, what happens if that driver then goes on to run over someone because they are not concentrating properly, does that RTA then become more important than the next domestic incident ?
I appreciate it is very difficult for and individual officer, for that very reason they should not be picking and choosing which laws they think have time to enforce. If there is a pecking order - it should be published so we can use it to discuss with police and crime commissioners, this is supposed to be a democratic system after all.

Re: A-hole in a van.
Thankyou. You have described my sons job perfectly. He is an experienced response officer. He says it never stops. While he is dealing with one urgent situation, the radio is screaming for him to attend another. Most of the work tends to be drink related domestics. The last thing he wants to do is make an arrest, as he is then stuck back at base for hours writing it up while the mayhem continues outside. The job has been cut and cut.
Most of the time he is single manned and of course at great risk. On the subject of mobile phones he says you cannot keep up with them. He does issue penalties when he sees it, but he is usually on the way to another urgent violent incident. Often he has to just tap on the window and rollick them as he moves on.
I think he would leave in an instant if he could get something else.
I really don't see why officers see that it is their responsibility to manage their own workload by skipping an arrest, they should do their job properly and let their highly paid superiors concern themselves with lack of resources.
