Pannier Racks

Hi

I am looking at adding a rear pannier rack to my 2010 Giant Defy 4.

Is there a guide on what pannier racks? I.e are they a standard size or does my frame limit me to a certain type?

Shimano 105 front brake & steel fork

Hi Guys

I have a steel fork that was with my Giant Defy 4 when I bought it back on 2009. I have just had the frame & fork resprayed ready to be built into a commuter.

last year when I was using it as a winter trainer and replaced the factory brakes to 105s. The front brake never really sat well on the front and didnt need the rear nut. I thought this was because of a build up of rust and dirt.

Now I have got it back from it being resprayed and cleaned, the front brake is no better, the bolt is not long enough for a nut to get on the back. Do I need a specific brake?

Stolen Eccleshill - Bradford

Hi Guys

A friend of mine has had 3 of his bikes pinched from his Garage in the Eccleshill area of Bradford last night. They just pinched the bikes and left everything else.

2. Beone Crossover - 2012 - 60 - Frame number unknown
3. Kona Kahuna - 2012 - 22" - Frame number F1112K3906

If you could keep your eyes peeled and let me know if you see or hear anything. I shall upload the pics asap.

/edit, pics now attached. The Beone is a stock photo.

Accident Information Thread

Guys

I recall reading a thread sometime ago on what to do in the event of an accident. It had advice such as calling police, taking details etc A lot of it pretty much common sense, however when the adrenalin is pumping that sometimes goes out of the window.

Does anyone have a link to it please? I have a friend who is commuting and want to send him a link to it.

40 klicks, 25 mph on a bicycle is exactly what the traffic calming measures are supposed to be supressing.

With a road width reduction, a cyclist is wise to be 'on the alert' for other traffic more than usual because, "everyone else is an idiot".

You may have the priority, and 25 mph is within the 30 mph speed limit, but if it were me, I'd err on the side of caution. I'm not a connoisseur of hospital food.

Also, and I think it is important to add,, Motorists' perceptions from experience expect cyclists to be riding at 14 - 16 mph. They will give a cyclist a glance and do a rough calc to approximate the cyclist's approach time ( based on the ASSUMED speed of the cyclist ). When the cyclist is rolling at 25 mph, it 'cocks up' the motorist's mental arithmetic and they get surprised by the 'ahead of schedule' arrival of the cyclist.
In other words, ride less furiously in a traffic situation, then both motorists and cyclist can judge each others progress a bit more accurately.

You will no doubt argue with this. The simple matter is the vast, vast majority of cyclists in a town environment don't go tear-arseing around at 25 mph. It is the speed of the vast, vast majority of cyclists that motorists base their calculations.
A cyclist at 25mph is unexpected.

I would say thats fair, however a car going 40mph in a built up area is a little different to a cycle going 25mph isnt it?

I shall be certainly be thinking about these points though and the ones of cyclist being second class citizens. Its sad but true!

Road Narrowing with Cycle Lane

This morning whilst cycling my normal commute I was almost hit by a car.

Down a road there is traffic calming where the road has been narrowed and a priority to certain vehicles is given. On one side provision has been given to cyclists however its full of rubbish therefore I use the normal route as I would in my car, i.e stick to the road and go through the narrowing.

Now, the priority in this case is with me, i.e the direction of my travel,I had priority of any vehicle travelling in the opposite direction. The driver seemed to think, just because there was a provision for a cyclist it means he had right of way over a cyclist. I wasnt travelling slow either, possibley 40km/h and I moved out to let him know I was going through.

ON his side the sign says "Give way to oncoming vehicles" and the last time I looked, I was a vehicle whilst on my bike. He didnt like the suggestion of a chat with the local Police either.

When I can, I go into the provision for cyclists and if I think its safe Ill let drivers know that by waving them through, but when its full of rubbish I aint doing that.

Re: 3 Bikes Stolen in Bradford, Eccleshill Area

a) They have been pulled
b) Yes, however when you get the details, the seller gets your details.
c) The seller wouldnt meet, he would only insist on sending the bikes by a courier
d) He has spoken to them daily and the Police are as frustrated with their own depts and eBay
e) The Police are going through this, however it takes a minimum of 4 weeks.

Re: 3 Bikes Stolen in Bradford, Eccleshill Area

Well, these bikes are being sold one at a time with other assumed stolen bikes & fishing gear on eBay.

The police cannot get the information off eBay and are now dropping it.

Who says crime doesnt pay?

Re: Leeds people - consultation re: Roundhay Road

Just looking at the plans and as with everything, not much in the way of making room for cyclists eh?

I commute down Kirkstall Road everyday thats having some priority bus lanes put in. It should make it a tad safer and better, but due to existing structures i.e houses etc there will always be pinch points where motor vehicles take priority. Its always been the same in this country.

The cycle lanes they are keeping in will not have anything from stopping vehicles entering them or parking on them, why not place a pin kerb along them or some raised area to at least notify the driver of encroachment?

I would ask why cant part of Roundhay Road be pushed back and a full length bus lane be put in? There is no need for a 10-15m pavement on there at all is there? There will be parts where thats not possible due to existing structure ala Kirkstall Road.

It will come down to the same old thing.......cost. Why oh why this government doesnt pump some more money in which would encourage more people to cycle I do not know. Clueless.

Good luck anyways and Ill keep an eye on here.

Re: Little Advice Re Accident

I had a call tonight from the driver. I thought "oh no here goes" However, she was just calling to see how I was and how my bike was and if there was anything she could do for me.

I told her I was fine, the bikes fine and not to worry.

There are some good people out there after all :)
